Woolgoolga is a small town on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, about 25 kilometres north of Coffs Harbour, with 5,791 people in the 2021 census. Out of all proportion to its size, it is one of the most Punjabi places in Australia: 1,013 residents, 17.5 per cent, were Sikhs in 2021, 1,009 people used Punjabi at home, and the town holds the first gurdwara opened in Australia, built by its banana farming families.

## Where is Woolgoolga, and why do Punjabis live there?

Woolgoolga stands on the Pacific Highway, about 550 kilometres north of Sydney and 365 kilometres south of Brisbane, in the City of Coffs Harbour. Locals call it Woopi. It has two beaches on the Pacific Ocean, a headland known for whale watching, and a hinterland of farms on the coastal hills. The area is the traditional land of the Gumbaynggirr people, and the town's name comes from Wiilgulga, their word connected with the lilly pilly trees that grew there. The name was gazetted as Woogoolga in 1888 and changed to Woolgoolga in 1966\. Permanent European settlement began in the 1870s, timbergetting and sawmilling followed in 1883, and a government jetty was built in 1892 and demolished in the 1950s.

Punjabis live in Woolgoolga because of bananas. The district was one of New South Wales' banana centres, and when wartime labour shortages opened the banana industry to Indian workers during the Second World War, Sikh families who had reached Australia before the White Australia Policy, or who were already working the north coast, settled here. After the war they bought the farms they had worked on, brought their wives from Punjab, and built a settled community in a small beach town. Woolgoolga is the regional heart of this series' map of [Punjabi places in Australia](https://jugti.com/kosh/places/australia/), a few hours south of [Brisbane](https://jugti.com/kosh/places/australia/brisbane/) and in the same state as [Sydney](https://jugti.com/kosh/places/australia/sydney/).

## What do the numbers say?

Woolgoolga counted 5,791 people in the 2021 census, with a median age of 45\. Punjabi was used at home by 1,009 of them, 17.4 per cent, by far the most used language other than English in the town: the next language, Mandarin, was used by 77 people. Sikhism was the town's second largest religious response, with 1,013 people, 17.5 per cent, behind only No Religion at 33.8 per cent and ahead of Anglican at 14.7 per cent and Catholic at 12.8 per cent. In a country where Sikhs were 0.8 per cent of the population in 2021, nearly one resident in five in Woolgoolga was Sikh. The town counted 633 residents born in India, 10.9 per cent, and 531 people, 9.2 per cent, gave Indian ancestry.

The sources describe Woolgoolga as holding the largest regional Sikh and Punjabi population in Australia, and the census shares explain why the description sticks: no big city community in this series comes close to a 17 per cent share of a whole town. The work figures show the modern farm economy too. Berry fruit growing was the town's largest industry of employment in 2021, with 278 workers, 11.7 per cent of those employed, the census trace of the shift from bananas to blueberries that remade the district's farms.

## From bananas to blueberries

Sikhs had migrated to New South Wales and Queensland before the White Australia Policy restricted non-European migration in 1901, and many lived on the margins on the north coast and in south east Queensland. Some began settling in Woolgoolga during the Second World War, when labour shortages relaxed the bar on Indian labour in the banana industry. After the war they acquired leasehold and freehold banana plantations, and in the 1950s and 1960s the men who had worked and bought land began bringing their wives from Punjab: in 1961 there were six Sikh women in Woolgoolga, and with them the first Sikh households and Australian born Sikh children. The pull of an established community drew Sikhs from other parts of Australia hoping to repeat the banana success, and the families are said to own 90 per cent of the local banana farms. When banana sales slumped in the late 1990s under competition from Queensland, many plantations were replaced by blueberries, and farming families diversified with them, while banana growing continues.

## Two gurdwaras and Curryfest

In 1968 the First Sikh Temple was opened in Woolgoolga, the first gurdwara opened in Australia and described as the country's first purpose built gurdwara, raised by the farming sangat with members of the wider town on its building committee. The town has two gurdwaras today: the First Sikh Temple Woolgoolga and the Guru Nanak Gurdwara, known as the Temple on the Hill, whose white building is the town's best known landmark. Every year the town celebrates the community in public at Curryfest, inaugurated in 2006 as a celebration of Woolgoolga's Punjabi heritage, with around 180 stalls and about 16,000 attendants reported at the festival, the largest single gathering of the Woolgoolga community.

Woolgoolga is a beach town of fewer than six thousand people that carries an outsized place in Punjabi Australia: the first gurdwara in the country, the largest regional Sikh settlement, and a Punjabi speaking share no Australian city matches.
