It counted 21,631 residents in the 2011 census and is known for the tomb of Baba Balraj and its grain market. ## Where is Balachaur? Balachaur is at the eastern edge of the Doaba, where the plain begins to meet the Shivalik foothills, at about 260 metres above sea level. It is almost equidistant from its neighbours: about 20 kilometres from Nawanshahr, its district headquarters, 25 kilometres from Rupnagar and 25 kilometres from Garhshankar, with Nurpur Bedi about 24 kilometres away. Chandigarh is about 68 kilometres to the south east and Delhi about 320 kilometres. The municipal town is small, about 6 square kilometres divided into 13 wards, but the tehsil it heads is large: 188,764 people in 2011 across some 500 square kilometres, most of them in villages, with the census town of Rail the tehsil's only other urban settlement. ## History and the Baba Balraj legend Balachaur's early story is told as legend, and it should be read as legend. One tradition says the royal family of Jaipur came here to meditate and named the place Balachaur after their son Balraj. The stronger local tradition centres on Raj Dev, a holy man of this country: in 1539, it is believed, Sher Shah Suri sought his blessings before launching his attack on the Mughal emperor Humayun, the campaign that would make Sher Shah master of northern India. Raj Dev died in 1596, and the local people built a tomb in his honour, where he is still revered as Baba Balraj. Whatever the literal truth of the royal visits, the tomb made Balachaur a place of veneration early, and the saint, not any king, gave the town its lasting identity. In recorded history the town grew as the administrative centre for the villages of the eastern Doaba, in the old Hoshiarpur side of the region. In 1949 the Balraj Mandir Committee was formed to care for the shrine, with Zaildar Balwant Singh as its first president, giving the old tomb a formal custodian. When Nawanshahr district was created in 1995, carved out of Hoshiarpur and Jalandhar, Balachaur came into it as the chief town of its own tehsil. In 2008 the district was renamed Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar for Bhagat Singh, whose ancestral village of Khatkar Kalan lies in the neighbouring tehsil, and Balachaur's offices, courts and records have worked under that name since. ## Geography and people The 2011 census counted 21,631 people in the municipal council, up from 18,156 in 2001: 11,180 men and 10,451 women, a sex ratio of 935 women for every 1,000 men, in 4,471 households. Children under six numbered 2,405, about 11 percent of the town, and the child sex ratio was 803\. Literacy was 80.91 percent, at 85.63 percent for men and 75.95 percent for women, above the district average. Scheduled Castes formed 34.75 percent of residents. By religion, Hindus formed 78.75 percent of the town and Sikhs 17.51 percent, with small Muslim, Buddhist, Jain and Christian communities, a mix that reflects the shrine town at its centre. Workers numbered 6,548\. Punjabi is the everyday language, and the town's life is bound to its villages: wheat and maize are the main crops of the surrounding country, and the fields run east until the ground starts to rise towards the Shivaliks. ## What is Balachaur known for? Balachaur is known first for Baba Balraj: the tomb and temple of the saint of its founding legend, cared for by the Mandir Committee since 1949, remain the town's spiritual centre and the reason many visitors come. Second, it is known as a working tehsil headquarters: Punjab government offices here serve the administrative needs of the villages of a large tehsil, and court, land and certificate work brings people in from across it every day. Third, for its market: a big bazaar and a large grain market, the Anaaj Mandi, where the wheat and maize of the surrounding villages are sold to wholesalers. Agriculture is the main source of income, and many residents also work in government and private jobs in Nawanshahr, Rupnagar, Ludhiana and Chandigarh, commuting out as others commute in. ## Places of interest The tomb and temple of Baba Balraj come first, the anchor of the town's legend and its oldest claim on a visitor's time. Education is the town's newer landmark: Baba Balraj Government College, on Bhaddi Road, named for the same saint, ended the years when local students had to leave for higher education, and its campus serves the whole tehsil. The grain market and the main bazaar are the town's commercial heart, busiest at harvest. Beyond the town, the interest is in the country it commands: the Shivalik foothills rising to the east, the villages of the tehsil with their own gurdwaras and shrines, among them Sudha Majra, where a gurdwara remembers Guru Hargobind, and the roads out to Rupnagar on the Sutlej and to Anandpur Sahib, one of Sikhism's holiest cities, within an easy drive. ## Getting there Balachaur is a road town. It stands on the highway network linking Nawanshahr, Rupnagar and Garhshankar, about 20 kilometres from Nawanshahr, and public and private buses run through the day to the major cities of Punjab and to towns in Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi. The nearest railway station is Garhshankar, about 25 kilometres away, and the nearest airport is Chandigarh, about 68 kilometres away. Its PIN code is 144521 and its vehicle registration is PB 20\. Most visitors arrive by bus or car, often combining the Baba Balraj shrine with a longer Doaba journey through Nawanshahr and Khatkar Kalan, or on the way east to Rupnagar and Anandpur Sahib. ## Balachaur today Today Balachaur is a compact service town for the eastern Doaba: a municipal council of traders, teachers, officials and farming families, with its college, its grain market and its shrine doing the work that larger cities do with malls and universities. Its population grew by about a fifth in the decade to 2011, steady growth for a town that has never chased industry. A local footnote shows the tehsil's small enterprise at work: the S.V. Cold Drink factory, set up in 2003 at Sudha Mazra in the tehsil, makes Lava cold drinks.
