Delta is a city in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, at the mouth of the Fraser River, and North Delta is one of the oldest and most concentrated Punjabi neighbourhoods in the Lower Mainland. The Guru Nanak Sikh Society was established in North Delta in 1973 to serve about 200 Sikh families in the Surrey and Delta area, and the 2021 census counted 19,235 Sikhs in Delta, 17.9 per cent of the city, alongside 27,990 South Asian residents.

## Where is Delta, and why do Punjabis live there?

Delta sits on the Fraser Lowland south of the Fraser River, bordered by Richmond to the north, Surrey to the east, Boundary Bay and the United States border to the south, and the Strait of Georgia to the west. The 2021 census counted 108,455 people in the city. Delta is officially made up of three distinct communities: North Delta, home to over half the population with 60,769 people, the historic fishing village of Ladner with 23,047, and Tsawwassen with 22,160.

Punjabis live overwhelmingly in North Delta, the corner of the city that touches [Surrey](https://jugti.com/kosh/places/canada/surrey/). Farming and sawmill work first drew Sikh families to the Fraser delta, and North Delta offered affordable suburban houses a short drive from the mills, farms and warehouses of Surrey and Richmond. Once families, shops and a gurdwara society were in place along the Scott Road corridor, new arrivals from Punjab headed straight for North Delta, and the neighbourhood grew with each decade. See [Punjabi places in Canada](https://jugti.com/kosh/places/canada/) for the full map.

## North Delta, a Punjabi suburb beside Surrey

The census numbers show how concentrated the community is. Across Delta as a whole, South Asians numbered 27,990 in 2021, 26.1 per cent of the city, and Delta had the fourth largest municipal South Asian population in British Columbia after Vancouver, Surrey and Abbotsford. Within North Delta itself, South Asians numbered 24,885, which is 41.1 per cent of that community's 60,769 residents, while Ladner and Tsawwassen remain far less South Asian in character.

India is the leading country of origin for Delta's immigrants. The Delta Local Immigration Partnership, working from the 2021 census, counted 35,555 immigrants in the city, of whom 12,375, or 35 per cent, were born in India, and in North Delta 45 per cent of immigrants were born in India. Punjabi remains the most commonly spoken home language among Delta's immigrant population: 8,045 immigrants, 23 per cent, spoke Punjabi at home, and among recent immigrants the share was 27 per cent.

## What do the census numbers say?

The 2021 census counted 19,235 Sikhs in Delta, 17.9 per cent of the city's population, making Sikhism the third largest religion in the city after Christianity and no religion. The growth has been rapid: Delta counted 3,695 Sikhs in 1991, 8,255 in 2001 and 10,495 in 2011, so the Sikh population nearly doubled in the single decade before 2021.

That trajectory mirrors Metro Vancouver as a whole, where the census counted 222,165 Sikhs in 2021, 8.5 per cent of the region. Delta's share, at close to one resident in five, is more than double the regional average, and only neighbouring Surrey, at 27.45 per cent, has a larger Sikh share among the region's big municipalities.

## The Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara on Scott Road

Delta's defining Sikh institution began on its own soil. The Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara was established in North Delta in 1973 by the Guru Nanak Sikh Society, the Guru Nanak Sikh Temple Society of Delta Surrey, to serve the roughly 200 Sikh families then living in the Surrey and Delta area. The society bought land that straddled the Surrey and Delta boundary on Scott Road, and after opposition from non-Sikhs in Delta, the city asked the society to build on the Surrey side of the property, in exchange for access to Delta's sewage system.

The current gurdwara opened in 1981 at 7050 120 Street, on Scott Road in Surrey, a short walk from North Delta homes. As of 1988 it was the largest gurdwara building in Greater Vancouver, and by 2004 it had about 37,000 members, making it one of the largest Sikh temples in North America. For Delta's Sikhs it remains the home gurdwara: a Delta society, built for Delta families, that happens to stand just across the municipal line.

## From farming town to city

Before European settlement, Delta's flatlands were inhabited by the Tsawwassen First Nation. Farming and fishing built the settler community, which was incorporated as a municipality in 1879 with Ladner as its centre. Delta stayed relatively isolated until the George Massey Tunnel opened in 1959 and the Tsawwassen ferry terminal in 1960; the population then grew by about 400 per cent in twenty years. The Alex Fraser Bridge, completed in 1986, tied North Delta directly to New Westminster and Richmond, and on 22 September 2017 Delta was formally reclassified as a city.

The same roads that ended Delta's isolation made North Delta a practical home for Punjabi families working across the Lower Mainland: Highway 99 through the Massey Tunnel to Vancouver, Highway 91 over the Alex Fraser Bridge, and Highway 10 east through Surrey and Langley all begin here.

## Delta's Punjabi community today

Today North Delta's Punjabis work across farming, trucking, warehousing, construction and the professions, and Scott Road's shops, sweet houses and services run in Punjabi as much as in English. The community's public life spills naturally across the line into [Surrey](https://jugti.com/kosh/places/canada/surrey/), whose Newton neighbourhood adjoins North Delta, while Ladner and Tsawwassen keep a quieter, coastal character. For a visitor, the essential stops are the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara on Scott Road, the Alex Fraser Bridge over the Fraser River, and the farmland and Burns Bog trails that show the landscape the first families came to work. Delta is one of the cities listed under [Punjabi places in Canada](https://jugti.com/kosh/places/canada/).
