Montreal is the largest city in Quebec, Canada, a French speaking island city on the St. Lawrence River, and home to a small, old Punjabi community shaped by work, faith and family. The 2021 census counted 15,630 Sikhs in the city and 79,670 South Asian residents, centred on Parc-Extension and LaSalle.

## Where is Montreal, and why do Punjabis live there?

Montreal sits on the Island of Montreal in the St. Lawrence River in southern Quebec, 196 kilometres east of Ottawa and 258 kilometres southwest of Quebec City. Founded in 1642 as Ville-Marie, it takes its name from Mount Royal, the triple peaked hill at its heart. The 2021 census counted 1,762,949 people in the city, the second largest in Canada, and 4,291,732 in its metropolitan area. French is the official language of the city, and in 2021 some 58.5 per cent of residents could speak both French and English.

Punjabis live in Montreal because earlier generations found work, affordable housing and each other here, first in the garment and textile streets of the inner city and later across the island. Montreal's Punjabi community is far smaller than the ones in the Toronto and Vancouver areas, and it lives its daily life in French and English as well as Punjabi, which gives it a character unlike any other Punjabi centre in Canada. See [Punjabi places in Canada](https://jugti.com/kosh/places/canada/) for the full map, and compare [Toronto](https://jugti.com/kosh/places/canada/toronto/), the country's largest Punjabi centre.

## Parc-Extension, the first landing place

For most newcomers, Montreal began in Parc-Extension, known locally as Parc-Ex: a dense, working class district of 1.6 square kilometres at the north end of Park Avenue, in the borough of Villeray, Saint-Michel and Parc-Extension. The City of Montreal's own history of the district records that development began in 1907, the district was annexed to Montreal in 1910, and over the decades it welcomed French Canadians, British, Eastern European, Armenian and Jewish residents, then Italians, then thousands of Greek immigrants in the 1960s. As Greek families moved on, newcomers from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh took their place.

Since the 1990s, most immigrants arriving in Parc-Ex have been of South Asian origin, and the district is now one of the most ethnically diverse neighbourhoods in Canada. The Jean-Talon corridor is its commercial heart, lined with South Asian grocery stores, sweet shops, jewellers and restaurants, and the area around Jean-Talon and Parc-Extension is often called Montreal's Little India. Its Punjabi and Gujarati residents include some of the oldest Indian immigrant families in the city. Textile businesses, the food industry, the public service and the railway were for years the main employers of the district, and garment work in and around Parc-Ex is part of how the first Punjabi families earned their living in Montreal.

## What do the census numbers say?

The 2021 census counted 15,630 Sikhs in the City of Montreal, 0.9 per cent of its population, and 22,990 Sikhs across the Montreal metropolitan area, up from 9,205 in the metropolitan count in 2011\. Quebec as a whole counted 23,345 Sikhs in 2021, which means the great majority of the province's Sikhs live in and around Montreal. South Asian residents numbered 79,670 in the city in 2021, 4.6 per cent of the population, up from 55,595 in 2016, and 121,260 across the metropolitan area.

Those numbers put Montreal in perspective. More than half of Canada's 771,790 Sikhs in 2021 lived in just four cities, Brampton, Surrey, Calgary and Edmonton, and Montreal is not among the country's big Sikh centres. Its community is older and more settled than its size suggests: as long ago as 1985 there were already about 9,000 Sikhs in the Montreal area. Punjabi is kept alive in homes and shops in Parc-Extension and LaSalle, and both of the city's main gurdwaras run Punjabi classes for children alongside kirtan teaching.

## Two gurdwaras, one community

Montreal's defining Sikh institution is Gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar, which serves the community from two sites. In LaSalle, in the southwest of the island, the gurdwara at 7801 Rue Cordner was built in 2001\. Its Nishan Sahib stands 172 feet high and is, the gurdwara notes, one of only 12 of its kind in the world. The LaSalle building hosts daily prayers and kirtan, Punjabi and kirtan classes for children, and the city's Nagar Kirtan parade, held in LaSalle each spring. In the past years thousands of Quebec students and visitors have come through its doors to learn about Sikhism.

The second site is Gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar Park Extension, at 430 Rue Saint-Roch in Parc-Ex, in the middle of the neighbourhood where so many Punjabi families first settled. LaSalle and Lachine, along the St. Lawrence in the southwest, have become particularly popular with Punjabi families, and the LaSalle gurdwara is described by community guides as a hub that has drawn a growing Sikh community around it. Together the two darbars anchor the community at both ends of its Montreal story: the first landing place and the settled suburb.

On the West Island, community guides also name Gurudwara Sahib du Grand Montreal, serving the settled Indian families of Dollard-des-Ormeaux and Pointe-Claire, where temples and gurdwaras host the festivals and cultural events of a suburban community that has put down long term roots.

## From garment streets to the West Island

Montreal's Punjabi history follows the city's own immigrant pattern. Families arrived in numbers after Canada's immigration system opened up in the 1960s and 1970s, and they landed where work and cheap housing were: the inner city districts along the old immigrant corridor that ran north up Saint Laurent Boulevard and Park Avenue. Work in textiles, food businesses, the public service and the railways, all named in the city's history of Parc-Extension as the district's main employers, supported the first generation, while shops and services on Jean-Talon turned the neighbourhood into a place where a new arrival could live a whole day in Punjabi.

As families prospered, many moved the way earlier Greek and Italian families had moved: out of Parc-Ex to LaSalle and Lachine in the southwest, and to Dollard-des-Ormeaux and Pointe-Claire on the West Island, trading small inner city flats for suburban houses while keeping Parc-Ex and the gurdwaras at the centre of community life. A memorial in Lachine to the victims of Air India Flight 182, opened in 2010, marks a sadder shared chapter: around 35 of the flight's passengers were Sikhs from Greater Montreal.

## Montreal's Punjabi community today

Today Montreal's Punjabis are a bilingual and often trilingual community, working across the city's hospitals, universities, transport, technology and small business sectors, with children growing up in French schools under Quebec's language laws. Vaisakhi brings the Nagar Kirtan to the streets of LaSalle, and Parc-Extension's Jean-Talon shops still draw shoppers from across the island for Punjabi food, sweets and clothing. For a visitor, the essential stops are the two Guru Nanak Darbar gurdwaras in LaSalle and Parc-Extension, the Jean-Talon corridor in Parc-Ex, and Mount Royal itself, the hill that named the city. Montreal is one of the cities listed under [Punjabi places in Canada](https://jugti.com/kosh/places/canada/).
