Sikh pioneers reached the city in the early 1900s, founded the Khalsa Diwan Society in 1906 and opened Canada's first gurdwara here in 1908\. More than a century later, the 2021 census counted 16,535 Sikhs in the city itself and 222,165 across Metro Vancouver, and South Vancouver's Punjabi Market remains the oldest Punjabi shopping district in North America. ## Where is Vancouver, and why did Punjabis settle there? Vancouver is the largest city in British Columbia, on the Pacific coast of Canada where the Fraser River delta meets Burrard Inlet. The 2021 census counted 662,248 people in the city and 2,642,825 in the Metro Vancouver region around it, which includes Surrey, Burnaby, Richmond and Delta. The city grew as a port and railway terminus, and its sawmills, docks and construction sites were exactly the kind of work open to the first Punjabi arrivals. Those arrivals came for work, and stayed for each other. Once a gurdwara, a few boarding houses and a network of Punjabi speakers existed in the city, new migrants headed for Vancouver because someone from their village was already there. That pattern, work first and community second, still explains the map of Punjabi Canada today: the biggest communities sit where the earliest pioneers landed. See the full list of [Punjabi places in Canada](https://jugti.com/kosh/places/canada/) for the cities that followed. ## The pioneers, 1902 to 1914 The story is usually dated to 3 June 1902, when a small group of Sikh soldiers from Punjab arrived in Vancouver aboard the Empress of Japan, travelling to the coronation celebrations of King Edward VII. Word of British Columbia's beauty and wages travelled back to Punjab, and between 1904 and 1908 around 5,000 South Asian migrants arrived in the province, almost all of them Punjabi Sikh men. Most worked in lumber mills and on farms, and many lived near the mills of Kitsilano and False Creek. The welcome did not last. Discrimination hardened into law, and in 1908 the federal continuous journey rule made direct travel from India practically impossible, cutting immigration to a trickle. The community's defining early moment came in 1914, when the Komagata Maru reached Vancouver harbour with 376 passengers, 340 of them Sikhs, and was held offshore for two months before being forced to leave. Vancouver's Sikhs organized food and support for the passengers throughout the standoff, and the episode is still remembered as a founding lesson in why the community needed its own institutions. ## The Khalsa Diwan Society and the first gurdwara On 22 July 1906 the community founded the Khalsa Diwan Society, the first Sikh organization in Canada. Its first gurdwara opened on 19 January 1908 at 1866 West 2nd Avenue, and for decades it served as far more than a place of worship: it was a hostel, an advice centre and a meeting hall for all South Asians in the region, Hindu and Muslim as well as Sikh. In the 1940s the society helped lead the campaign for the voting rights South Asians had been denied for forty years. In 1969 the society moved to its present home at Ross Street and Southwest Marine Drive in South Vancouver, where the Ross Street Gurdwara still stands. A second historic congregation, the Akali Singh Gurdwara on Skeena Street in East Vancouver, opened in 1952\. Between them, these two gurdwaras anchored Punjabi life in the city through the lean years and into the era of mass immigration after the 1960s. ## What do the census numbers say? The 2021 census counted 16,535 Sikhs in the City of Vancouver, 2.5 per cent of its population. The city figure alone understates Vancouver's place in Punjabi Canada, because most of the community now lives in the suburbs: across Metro Vancouver the census counted 222,165 Sikhs, 8.5 per cent of the region, one of the largest Sikh populations of any metropolitan area outside India. Within the city, the community is concentrated in the south. The federal riding of Vancouver South, which covers the Sunset and Victoria-Fraserview neighbourhoods, counted 10,775 Sikhs in 2021, about 10 per cent of its population. In [Surrey](https://jugti.com/kosh/places/canada/surrey/), by contrast, Sikhs numbered 154,415 and formed 27.4 per cent of that city, the highest share of any large Canadian city. Vancouver is the historic centre; Surrey is the demographic centre. Both facts are part of the same story. ## Punjabi Market and South Vancouver From the 1950s to the 1970s, Punjabi families settled in the Sunset neighbourhood of South Vancouver and built hundreds of the split-level houses known as Vancouver Specials. On 31 May 1970, Sucha Singh Claire and Harbans Kaur Claire opened a sari and drapery shop at Main Street and 49th Avenue, and the Punjabi Market was born. Dozens of jewellers, grocers, sweet shops and fabric stores followed along Main Street between 48th and 51st Avenues, and in 1993 the corner of Main and 49th received the first bilingual Punjabi and English street signs in the city. The market marked its 50th anniversary in 2020\. It is quieter than at its peak, because from the 1980s many families moved east to Surrey and Delta for larger and cheaper houses, and newer arrivals followed them. But the strip remains a landmark, a first stop for wedding shopping, and the route of the city's Vaisakhi parade, which the Khalsa Diwan Society has organized from the Ross Street Gurdwara every April since 1979 and which the city granted civic parade status in 2013. ## Vancouver's Punjabi community today Today Vancouver's Punjabis are part of a metro-wide community that also fills [Surrey](https://jugti.com/kosh/places/canada/surrey/), Delta and [Abbotsford](https://jugti.com/kosh/places/canada/abbotsford/), each covered in this guide. Punjabi is heard daily in South Vancouver's shops and gurdwaras, the Punjabi Market is being rediscovered by a younger generation of South Asian business owners, and the Ross Street Gurdwara still opens its langar hall to everyone, as it has for more than a century.
