Winnipeg is the capital and largest city of Manitoba, Canada, and the centre of the Sikh community on the eastern Prairies. A Sikh soldier from Punjab enlisted in Winnipeg in 1916, the Sikh Society of Manitoba was founded in 1969, and the 2021 census counted 32,510 Sikhs in the city, 4.41 per cent of its population. The community’s heart is the northwest, in The Maples and Mandalay West, where Sikhs form more than 20 per cent of some neighbourhoods.

## Where is Winnipeg, and why do Punjabis live there?

Winnipeg is a city in Manitoba, Canada, in the middle of the Canadian Prairies. The 2021 census counted 749,607 people in the city and 834,678 in the Winnipeg metropolitan area, making it the largest city in the province and its capital, home to the Manitoba Legislature. It grew as a railway and trading city at the centre of the continent, and its hospitals, universities, transport firms and public services still draw newcomers from across the world.

Punjabi Winnipeg grew the Prairie way: a few pioneers first, then institutions, then families. Work brought the first Sikhs, the gurdwara held them together, and word of affordable houses and an established community in the city’s northwest brought the next generations. Manitoba counted 35,470 Sikhs in 2021, 2.71 per cent of the province, and nearly all of them live in Winnipeg. See [Punjabi places in Canada](https://jugti.com/kosh/places/canada/) for the full map.

## A soldier in 1916, and the pioneers

Winnipeg’s Sikh story has an early, documented face. In January 1916 a 27 year old Sikh man who gave his name only as Baboo walked into the enlistment office in Winnipeg and volunteered for the First World War. Born in Punjab in 1888, he had served four years in a cavalry unit in Madras before immigrating to Canada, and the clerk added the name John to his papers, so history knows him as John Baboo.

Baboo was assigned to the 144th Battalion, sailed for England in September 1916, and fought in France until an artillery shell shattered the bones of his lower right leg at the Battle of Vimy Ridge. He recovered in a London hospital, never lost his limp, and was discharged in January 1918 with his conduct described as very good. His attestation papers are now part of A Sikh Century of Service, an exhibit shown in Winnipeg schools by Sikh Heritage Manitoba, a reminder that Sikhs were serving Canada from this city more than a century ago, despite the racism and barriers of the time.

## The Sikh Society of Manitoba, 1969 to today

The community’s anchor institution is the Sikh Society of Manitoba. In 1969 a small group of Sikh immigrants rented a space and formed the society, and in 1983 they broke ground on a piece of frozen land and built their permanent home. Today its gurdwara at 1244 Mollard Road is Manitoba’s oldest and largest, open every day, with a Khalsa School where children learn Punjabi language and tradition, a library, and a langar that serves free food to all who ask on weekends.

The society marked 50 years in 2019, and members of Parliament have praised it in the House of Commons not only for meeting the spiritual needs of Sikhs from Winnipeg North and beyond, but for advocating diversity and building understanding of Sikhism in the wider city. A major renovation, begun in 2019 and completed after the pandemic interrupted it, renewed the building for the next generation, funded by membership fundraising and community finance.

## What do the census numbers say?

The 2021 census counted 32,510 Sikhs in the City of Winnipeg, 4.41 per cent of its population, and 33,435 across the Winnipeg metropolitan area, 4.08 per cent of the region. That makes Winnipeg one of the most Sikh cities in Canada by share of population, ahead of much larger centres, and Sikhism one of the most followed religions in Manitoba, where Sikhs form 2.71 per cent of the province.

The federal riding of Winnipeg North counted 14,230 Sikhs in 2021, 14.24 per cent of its residents. Within the city, the established Sikh neighbourhoods are in the northwest quadrant, notably The Maples and Mandalay West in the far north end, which are over 20 per cent Sikh. As in other Prairie cities, the pattern is family settlement: grandparents, parents and children close to the gurdwara, the school and each other.

## Northwest Winnipeg and community life

The northwest is where Punjabi Winnipeg is most visible: the Sikh Society’s gurdwara on Mollard Road, Punjabi spoken in the shops and schoolyards of The Maples, and streets around the gurdwara busy on Gurpurabs. The society’s annual Nagar Kirtan, held near the Manitoba Legislative Building, drew over 20,000 people in a recent year, bringing the procession, hymns and free food stalls into the centre of the provincial capital.

Winnipeg also carries the community’s names on its map. Shaheed Bhagat Singh Park, one of the city’s largest urban prairie parks, was inaugurated in August 2018 in Bridgwater Trails, named for the freedom fighter Bhagat Singh. Inderjit Claire Park honours an educator and community activist who moved to Winnipeg in 1986, and Apee Panchhi Park in Transcona, opened in 2017, honours a Punjabi businessman and philanthropist. Sikhs have also represented the city in politics: Dr Gulzaar Singh Cheema served in the Manitoba Legislature from 1988 to 1993, and Diljeet Brar was elected as an MLA in 2019.

## Winnipeg’s Punjabi community today

Today the community that rented a hall in 1969 raises money for the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba, over 51,000 dollars in one recent effort, runs food and aid programs, and teaches its children Punjabi in its own school inside the gurdwara. Its leaders describe the work in the language of the faith itself: work hard, earn honestly, and help where help is needed.

For a visitor, the essential stop is the Sikh Society of Manitoba’s gurdwara at 1244 Mollard Road, open to everyone, and the Nagar Kirtan in spring, when Punjabi Winnipeg fills the streets around the Legislative Building.
