## Where is Dinanagar Tehsil?

Dinanagar Tehsil is a tehsil in the north east of Gurdaspur district in the Majha region of Punjab, India, with its headquarters in the historic town of Dinanagar. Created as a full tehsil in May 2018, it administers the headquarters town and the 209 villages listed in its tehsil directory.

The tehsil sits in the Upper Bari Doab, the plain between the Ravi river to the north west and the Beas to the south east, below the Himalayan foothills. Dinanagar town stands about 14 kilometres north east of Gurdaspur city, the district headquarters, with Pathankot district beyond it to the north. Around the town the land is a mix of upland plain and the flood plains of the two rivers, crossed by seasonal streams, with loamy soils and groundwater that the Dinanagar town record puts at about 5 to 8 metres deep in most parts, suitable for irrigation and domestic use.

For local administration the tehsil is the revenue unit, while rural development runs through the Dinanagar development block, one of the eleven blocks of Gurdaspur district. Dinanagar town itself is run by a municipal council, counted as a Class-2 council in district listings, and the area elects its own member to the Punjab assembly from the Dina Nagar constituency, alongside its place in the Gurdaspur parliamentary constituency.

## A headquarters town founded in 1730

The headquarters town gives the tehsil its story. Dinanagar was founded in 1730 by Adina Beg, who served as a governor under the Mughals and the Marathas, on the bank of the Hasli, also called the Shah Nahar canal, as his residence and cantonment. He governed largely from this town while he was governor of nearby Behrampur, and the settlement was first called Adinanagar after him. The old town was walled, with six strong gates built by Adina Beg, and the gates took their names from the villages they led toward, among them Paniar, Awankha and Taragarh.

Under the Sikh Empire the town found a second life. Maharaja Ranjit Singh made Dinanagar his favourite summer resort and, in effect, his summer capital, spending the two months of May and June there every year and holding his durbar in the town. A baradari stood on the bank of the Hasli among shady mango groves, and the town served as one of his cantonments. In May 1838 it was at Dinanagar that the Maharaja received the Macnaghten mission, which negotiated the proposed alliance for placing Shah Shujah Durrani on the throne of Kabul.

After the British annexed Punjab in March 1849, a new district of Adinanagar was created with Dinanagar as its headquarters, taking in the old Gurdaspur tehsil area and 181 villages of the Pathankot side. The experiment was brief: in July 1849 the civil officers and military escort moved to Batala, as Dinanagar was thought unhealthy, and on 1 May 1852 the headquarters shifted to Gurdaspur, which has remained the district seat since. Dinanagar settled into life as a market and service town for its countryside.

## From sub-tehsil to tehsil in 2018

For most of its modern life Dinanagar was a sub-tehsil under Gurdaspur, not a tehsil in its own right. That changed in stages across the district: Kalanaur became a tehsil on 14 December 2014, and Dinanagar followed in May 2018\. The district is now administered through six subdivisions, Batala, Dera Baba Nanak, Dinanagar, Fatehgarh Churian, Gurdaspur and Kalanaur, and Dinanagar handles its own revenue and local administration from the headquarters town.

Because the tehsil was created after the last census, the Census of 2011 has no separate population figure for Dinanagar Tehsil: its villages were counted inside the old Gurdaspur sub-district. The headquarters town alone counted 23,976 people in the 2011 Census. Today the tehsil directory lists 209 villages under Dinanagar, a countryside of gram panchayats whose residents look to Dinanagar town for markets, schools, colleges, health care and the railway. Villages such as Paniar, Awankha, Taragarh and Mugrala, whose names the old town gates once carried, are part of that living hinterland, and Pandori village near the town was long noted for deposits of salt used to make potassium nitrate.

## Land, water and farming

This is farming country first. The Hasli or Shah Nahar canal, on whose bank the town was founded, watered the gardens and fields around Dinanagar for centuries, and canal and groundwater irrigation still underpin the local economy. Across the Gurdaspur plain the main crops are wheat and paddy, with sugarcane, maize, vegetables and fodder, and dairy farming woven through the village economy. Dinanagar was long famous for its mango gardens, and mango and mulberry, along with orange, kinnow and lemon, are among the fruit trees grown around the town.

The town added small industry to farming. Dinanagar became known for its loi and shawl work and for wood industries, and after Partition in 1947 a number of conduit pipe manufacturing units were set up there. Its grain and goods markets collect the produce of the tehsil villages, and the town's colleges and schools, among them institutions linked to the Dayanand tradition, draw students from across the tehsil.

## Faith, heritage and a hard day in 2015

The old town's religious life is recorded in its temples and maths. Local histories name the Bhutnath Mandir, the Kali Mata Mandir and the Sheetla Mandir among its older shrines, and the Shivala Bhaiya, built in 1844\. In 1938 Swami Sawtantra Nand founded the Dayanand Math at Dinanagar, which became a centre of learning and Ayurveda. Maharaja Ranjit Singh's buildings are the town's other heritage: his baradari by the canal, his rest house and the residence built for his general Ventura are remembered in local accounts, even where the structures themselves have faded.

On 27 July 2015 Dinanagar suffered a terror attack in which seven people were killed, after attackers fired on a bus and then attacked the town's police station. The operation to end the attack lasted almost twelve hours. It was the first major attack of its kind in Punjab in two decades, and the town is remembered in the district's modern history for the police officers, home guards and civilians who died that day.

## Getting to Dinanagar Tehsil

Dinanagar town has its own railway station, Dina Nagar, on the Amritsar to Pathankot line, the broad gauge line opened in 1884 that links the border districts of Amritsar, Gurdaspur and Pathankot. The station stands between Gurdaspur to the south west and Parmanand to the north east, and trains run from Dinanagar toward both Amritsar and Pathankot, including long distance services toward Jammu and Delhi. The line is also a strategic diversion route when the main line toward Jammu is interrupted.

By road, the national highway that runs through Gurdaspur city continues north east to Dinanagar, about 14 kilometres away, and onward toward Pathankot, about 20 kilometres from the town. A bypass takes heavy traffic around the town. Buses and shared transport link Dinanagar with Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Dhariwal and the villages of the tehsil, making the headquarters town the natural first stop for anyone visiting this corner of Gurdaspur district.
