Doraha is a municipal council town in Ludhiana district of Punjab, India, on the Grand Trunk Road between Ludhiana and Khanna, where the main railway line and the Sirhind Canal cross. Its name means two ways. A Mughal serai and Guru Hargobind gurdwaras mark its past. The 2011 census counted 25,424 people.

## Where is Doraha?

Doraha is in the east of Ludhiana district, in Payal tehsil, about 21 kilometres from Ludhiana city and about the same distance short of Khanna, on the Grand Trunk Road towards Ambala. Payal town, its tehsil headquarters, is about 8 kilometres away. Three great lines of movement meet here: the highway, the Delhi to Amritsar railway, and the Sirhind Canal, which passes through the middle of the town on its way from Ropar before splitting into the branches that water Malwa. Its PIN code is 141421\. The town is governed by a municipal council of 13 wards and works as the market, school and service centre for the villages of the Payal block around it.

## How did Doraha get its name?

Doraha means two ways, or a place where ways part, and the municipal council's own profile records several local explanations for it. In one, Guru Hargobind rested here for a night with the 52 hill rajas freed with him from Gwalior: in the morning the Guru went one way, towards Ghudani, and the rajas went another, each to his own capital. In another, travellers carrying the ashes of their dead rested at the serai and parted in the morning, some for Kiratpur Sahib and some for Haridwar. A third says that every fort had one door, but the fort at Doraha had two. The council also preserves an older name for the town, Kiasabad Chaurasi. None of these accounts can be proved from documents, but together they fix the town's identity: a crossing place, where journeys divide.

## History: serai, canal and timber

Doraha grew on the imperial highway that is now the Grand Trunk Road. The District Census Handbook records its old serai, the Sarai Lashkari, said to have been built in the time of Emperor Aurangzeb, a large structure in its day and now in ruins. Serais stood a day's march apart on the Mughal road and sheltered armies, merchants and pilgrims, and Doraha's was the town's first landmark. The council's profile adds that Doraha was the last town of the Patiala state on this road, a border qasba where one jurisdiction ended and another began. Two works of the nineteenth century remade it: the railway, whose Doraha station opened in 1870 on the line between Ambala and Amritsar, and the Sirhind Canal, which began carrying Sutlej water from Ropar in 1882 and reaches Doraha before dividing into its Abohar, Bathinda and Patiala branches. Timber floated and traded along the canal made Doraha, in the council's words, the main market of timber in Punjab, dealing in sleepers, battens and rafting timber, and the trade, the road and the rails together carried the town into the twentieth century.

## Geography and people

The 2011 census counted 25,424 people in the municipal council, up from 18,986 in 2001 and 9,589 in 1991, on a census town area of 6 square kilometres, a density of about 4,237 people per square kilometre. There were 14,353 men and 11,071 women in 5,291 households: a sex ratio of 771 women per 1,000 men, strikingly below the Punjab average of 895, and a sign of how many working men the highway and canal economy draws in. Children under seven numbered 2,831, about 11 per cent. Scheduled Castes numbered 6,340, about 25 per cent. Literates numbered 18,622 among residents aged seven and above, an effective literacy rate of 82.42 per cent, above the Punjab average of 75.84 per cent, and 10,075 residents were recorded as workers. By faith, Hindus form the majority at 54.34 per cent, with Sikhs at 42.93 per cent, Muslims at 1.97 per cent and Christians at 0.43 per cent. Punjabi is the town's language.

## Faith and places of interest

The ruined Sarai Lashkari is Doraha's oldest landmark, its surviving gateways still showing the scale of the Mughal road system. The town's Sikh memory centres on Guru Hargobind, whose visit the council's profile links to four places: Gurdwara Damdama Sahib, Gurdwara Ber Sahib, Gurdwara Sarai Sahib and Gurdwara Bauli Sahib. The profile records two historic land grants, patas, made for the gurdwara, one of 568 bighas and one of 70 bighas, and Bauli Sahib recalls the town's wells, whose water once irrigated its fields and orchards. The council has also raised a statue of former chief minister Beant Singh, counted in its profile among the leaders this area has given Punjab. About eight kilometres away at Ghurani Kalan, another historic gurdwara of Guru Hargobind displays his angarkha, a shoe and a manuscript, and together the two towns form a regular stop on the Guru's Malwa trail.

## Education, work and town life

Before 1974, Doraha's students travelled to Khanna or Ludhiana for higher education. That year Dr Ishwar Singh founded Guru Nanak National College in the town, and the council's profile lists a second college, G. T. B. College, alongside a government senior secondary school, government and municipal primary schools and a row of private schools including Khalsa Girls High School and Aryaputri Pathshala. Work in the town mixes the old and the new: the grain and timber trades of the highway era, small industry along the road, the municipal and block offices, and daily commuting to Ludhiana and Khanna. The council's current preoccupation, in its own profile, is sewerage: pipes cover most of the town, three treatment plants are working, and the treated water is used to irrigate farmland, a canal town's old habit of reusing water in a modern form.

## Getting there and Doraha today

Doraha railway station, code DOA, stands beside Main Bazaar Road on the Ambala to Attari line under Northern Railway's Ambala division. It opened in 1870, has two platforms, and its line was electrified on the Mandi Gobindgarh to Ludhiana sector in 1996 to 1997\. By road the Grand Trunk Road ties the town to Ludhiana, Khanna, Sirhind and Ambala, and buses run to Payal and the villages of the block. The nearest large railheads and the Tricity airport serve longer journeys. Today Doraha is a small town doing a larger town's work: a canal branch point, a railway and highway halt, a college town and a market for the Payal countryside, still living up to its name as the place where ways part, and where a traveller on the old imperial road can still read its history in a ruined serai and four gurdwaras.
