Virewala kalan is a village of Faridkot tehsil in Faridkot district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Faridkot, about 24 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Faridkot community development block and is served by the Virewala Kalan gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 035497, and it covers 452 hectares. ## Population and households The 2011 census counted 1,139 people in Virewala kalan: 598 men and 541 women, living in 205 households, an average of about 5.6 people per household. Spread over its 452 hectares, the population density works out to about 252 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 905 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 128, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 367 people, about 32 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded. Literacy in 2011 stood at 70.33 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 75.77 per cent and women at 64.56 per cent. The census recorded 530 workers, about 47 per cent of the village. Of the 346 main workers, the largest group, 196, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 76 agricultural labourers and 71 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 184 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year. ## Land and farming Farming covers most of Virewala kalan's land. Of the village's 452 hectares, 389 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (381 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (8 hectares). About 41 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds.
