## Where is Fatehgarh Sahib Tehsil?

Fatehgarh Sahib Tehsil is a tehsil of Fatehgarh Sahib district in the Malwa region of Punjab, India, headquartered in the twin city of Sirhind-Fatehgarh Sahib on the Grand Trunk Road. The largest tehsil of its district by area, it counted 202,334 people in 171 villages and one town at the Census of 2011.

Fatehgarh Sahib is one of its district's four tehsils, with Amloh, Bassi Pathana and Khamanon, and at 484 square kilometres the largest by area, though Amloh holds slightly more people. Its headquarters town stands about 50 kilometres west of Chandigarh. The land is flat alluvial plain with sandy to sandy loam soils, in the NABARD district profile's description, under a subtropical monsoon climate. The Sirhind Canal, opened in 1882 from the Ropar headworks on the Sutlej, waters this side of Malwa; the master plan notes its Nirwana Branch running parallel to the highway.

The tehsil total used here, 202,334 people in 39,387 households, is the figure the census tehsil listing and the district tehsil table agree on. Its parts need care: the listing's table counts 144,237 rural people and 58,097 urban, adding exactly to the total, while a summary line on the same page swaps the shares, calling 71.29 percent urban when the table shows it is the rural share. Area too is framed three ways: 484 square kilometres (tehsil table), 484.09 (master plan land records) and 483.51 (VillageInfo).

## Sirhind, the old city that anchors the tehsil

Almost everything in this tehsil turns on Sirhind, one of the oldest towns of eastern Punjab. The district portal traces its first references to Varahamihira's Brihat Samhita, which calls the country Satudar Desh, and to the seventh century traveller Huan Tsang, for whom Sirhind was a district capital of the Sutlej country. In the twelfth century it was a military outpost of Prithviraj Chauhan of Delhi. The popular reading of the name, Sar-i-Hind, the frontier of Hind, fits its Mughal role: a provincial capital controlling the Lahore to Delhi highway and headquarters of Mughal administration in eastern Punjab. Surviving monuments of that age include the Aam Khas Bagh gardens and the Rauza Sharif, tomb of the Sufi scholar Sheikh Ahmad Sirhindi (1564 to 1624).

After December 1705, written up next, a Sikh force under Banda Singh Bahadur took Sirhind in 1710, Wazir Khan was killed, and the Khalsa retook the town in 1764\. In the princely era the area lay mainly in the Patiala and Nabha states, known then as the Bassi district. A first Fatehgarh Sahib district existed inside PEPSU after Independence but was merged into Patiala district in 1953\. The present district, and with it the modern shape of this tehsil, dates from 13 April 1992, Baisakhi Day.

## The martyrdom of the younger Sahibzadas

In Sikh memory this tehsil is the land of the Chhotte Sahibzade. The Sikh Encyclopedia's account runs as follows. After Guru Gobind Singh Ji evacuated Anandpur on the night of 5 to 6 December 1705, his mother Mata Gujri Ji and her two younger grandsons, Zorawar Singh, aged nine, and Fateh Singh, aged seven, were separated from him at the flooded Sarsa and taken by their cook Gangu to his village Kheri, near Morinda. Gangu betrayed them, and on 7 December 1705 Morinda officials took the three into custody and sent them to Sirhind, where they were held in the winter cold in the Thanda Burj, the Cold Tower of the fort. On 9 December the boys were produced before Wazir Khan, the faujdar of Sirhind, who offered riches for conversion and threatened death on refusal. Nawab Sher Muhammad Khan of Malerkotla protested that innocent children should not be harmed, and the boys were given more time, but held firm. On 11 December they were ordered to be sealed alive in a wall; as the masonry rose to chest height it crumbled. On 12 December 1705, refusing conversion once more, they were put to death. Mata Gujri Ji, still held in the Cold Tower, died when the news reached her. The next day the Sirhind merchant Seth Todar Mal cremated the three; tradition holds he bought the ground by covering it with gold coins, and Gurdwara Jyoti Sarup marks that site.

The dating is not stated one way everywhere. The district page dates the martyrdom to 1704, one line of the Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib account gives 9 December 1705, and the Shaheedi Jor Mela account gives 26 December 1705 for the entombment. This page follows the Sikh Encyclopedia's sequence, 7 to 12 December 1705, and leaves the other dates visible. The shrines stand about 5 kilometres north of old Sirhind: Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib, whose Bhora Sahib sanctum preserves the historic wall, Gurdwara Burj Mata Gujri at the Thanda Burj, Gurdwara Shahid Ganj, and Gurdwara Jyoti Sarup about 1.5 kilometres southeast. The main gurdwara was built in 1844 under Maharaja Karam Singh of Patiala and rebuilt since. Every December the three day Shaheedi Jor Mela draws lakhs of pilgrims, and roadside villages organise langar for the sangat.

## The headquarters town of Sirhind-Fatehgarh Sahib

The tehsil is run from a twin city that carries both names. Fatehgarh Sahib, the newer settlement around the gurdwara, was given town status in December 1996 as a Nagar Panchayat and merged with the Sirhind Municipal Council on 8 April 1998; the town is officially Sirhind-Fatehgarh Sahib and hosts the district's municipal council. At the Census of 2011 the tehsil's single town held the whole urban population of 58,097 people in 11,899 households, with a sex ratio of 896 and a listed literacy rate of 74.66 percent. The town's own reference page quotes 60,852 as its 2011 census population, its infobox labelling the same figure 2013; the two figures are stated side by side, not merged.

The town is the tehsil's service centre: district and tehsil offices, courts, the Sirhind market committee, and shops and transport serving pilgrims all year and Jor Mela crowds each December. Its colleges anchor education for surrounding villages: Mata Gujri College, Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, Lincoln College of Law and Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Polytechnic College. The district economy rests mainly on agriculture, industry and allied activities, the portal says, and the town grows on that pattern beside Mandi Gobindgarh steel town in neighbouring Amloh tehsil.

## Villages, blocks and people

The census tehsil listing counts 171 villages, from Chanarthal Kalan, the largest at 3,784 people, down to Attewali, recorded with no residents. Other frames count differently, left open here: VillageInfo gives 175 villages, and a gram panchayat directory 170 villages in 166 gram panchayats. Chanarthal Kalan also names a sub-tehsil inside this tehsil: district accounts differ here too, one listing two district sub-tehsils, Mandi Gobindgarh and Chanarthal Kalan, and another Mandi Gobindgarh alone. Its villages are served mainly by the Sirhind and Khera development blocks, two of the district's five, but block and tehsil boundaries do not coincide: the District Census Handbook counts 102 villages in Sirhind block and 83 in Khera block, more together than the tehsil total.

At the Census of 2011 the tehsil was 75.98 percent Sikh (153,729 people), 20.41 percent Hindu (41,295), 2.94 percent Muslim (5,954) and 0.39 percent Christian. Scheduled Castes made up 31.1 percent of its people, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded. The sex ratio was 889 women per 1,000 men, and children aged 0 to 6 numbered 21,055, or 10.41 percent. The census listing gives literacy of 71.02 percent, male 74.55 and female 67.05\. Punjabi is the tehsil's language: at district level, labelled as such, 89.92 percent of the district spoke Punjabi as a first language in 2011 and 9.15 percent Hindi. The entry keeps the Malwa label, since Sirhind was this tract's Mughal era capital, while the town account calls the local speech Puadhi.

## Farming, work and getting there

Farming is the tehsil's base, and it is thirsty farming. The NABARD district profile, a district level source, records 99.4 percent of the district's net sown area under irrigation, about 90,000 hectares by tubewells against about 12,000 by canal, and classifies all five district blocks as over-exploited for groundwater. Its crop table puts wheat on about 84,000 hectares and paddy on about 86,000 across the district, sugarcane and maize much smaller: the paddy and wheat rotation, tubewells doing most of the work. Beyond the fields, work runs through the headquarters town's offices and markets, the Sirhind and Chanarthal market committees' grain trade, and the gurdwaras' pilgrim economy.

The Grand Trunk Road is still the tehsil's spine. The master plan places the town on the Ambala to Ludhiana highway, the old NH 1, now NH 44, and gives distances, labelled as its figures, of about 28 kilometres from Rajpura, 30 from Patiala, 52 from Chandigarh and 65 from Ludhiana. Sirhind Junction stands on the Delhi to Amritsar line, with the Sirhind to Nangal line branching from it, and Fatehgarh Sahib has its own station on that branch. The town gives its name to the Fatehgarh Sahib assembly constituency, seat 55.
