Tarkhan Majra is a village of Fatehgarh Sahib tehsil in Fatehgarh Sahib district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Fatehgarh Sahib, about 2 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Sirhind community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 032648, and it covers 142 hectares. ## Population and households The 2011 census counted 1,674 people in Tarkhan Majra: 895 men and 779 women, living in 351 households, an average of about 4.8 people per household. Spread over its 142 hectares, the population density works out to about 1,179 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 870 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 186, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,098 people, about 66 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded. Literacy in 2011 stood at 75.67 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 81.17 per cent and women at 69.24 per cent. The census recorded 597 workers, about 36 per cent of the village. Of the 407 main workers, the largest group, 372, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 18 cultivators on their own land and 13 agricultural labourers. A further 190 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year. ## Land and farming Farming covers most of Tarkhan Majra's land. Of the village's 142 hectares, 117 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (117 hectares). About 23 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 7 hours a day.
