Thara Singhwala Uttar is a village in Jalalabad tehsil of Fazilka district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Jalalabad, about 7 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Guru Har Sahai community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 034894, and it covers 93 hectares. ## Population and households The 2011 census counted 1,540 people in Thara Singhwala Uttar: 778 men and 762 women, living in 260 households, an average of about 5.9 people per household. Spread over its 93 hectares, the population density works out to about 1,655 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 979 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 241, about 16 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,510 people, about 98 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded. Literacy in 2011 stood at 63.05 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 73.81 per cent and women at 52.17 per cent. The census recorded 446 workers, about 29 per cent of the village. Of the 388 main workers, the largest group, 224, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 109 agricultural labourers and 55 cultivators on their own land. A further 58 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year. ## Land and farming Farming covers most of Thara Singhwala Uttar's land. Of the village's 93 hectares, 82 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (82 hectares). About 11 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day.
