Gujranwala is a major city in Punjab, Pakistan, about 80 km north of Lahore. It is the birthplace of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, founder of the Sikh Empire, born here in 1780, and of the Punjabi writer Amrita Pritam, born here in 1919\. Nicknamed the City of Wrestlers, it is now Pakistan's third-largest industrial centre.

## Where is Gujranwala?

Gujranwala sits at the heart of the Rechna Doab, the strip of land between the Chenab river to the north and the Ravi to the south, on the flat plains of northern Punjab, Pakistan. It is part of the historic Majha region, about 80 km south of the provincial capital Lahore, with Sialkot and Gujrat to its north and Faisalabad some 160 km to the southwest. The city stands 226 metres above sea level, on the old Grand Trunk Road axis that has carried its trade for centuries.

## History

Gujranwala is a young city by Punjabi standards. Its exact origins are unclear, but it may have begun as a village in the middle of the 16th century, and its name means the abode of the Gujjars, the pastoral people who once dominated this part of the plain. Local tradition once held that its original name was Khanpur Sansi; recent scholarship traces it to Serai Gujran, the inn of the Gujjars, a village that stood near what is now the Khiyali Gate.

The city rose with the Sikh misls. Charat Singh of the Sukerchakia Misl built a fort here between 1756 and 1758, and made Gujranwala his capital in 1763\. His son Maha Singh succeeded him, and in 1780 Maha Singh's son Ranjit Singh was born in the city's Purani Mandi market. The boy would unite the misls and found the Sikh Empire, keeping Gujranwala as his capital until he captured Lahore from the Durrani Afghans in 1799\. Hari Singh Nalwa, Ranjit Singh's most famous general, held the city as a jagir after 1799, built a high mud wall around it, and laid the grid street plan that survives in the old city today. Jind Kaur, Ranjit Singh's last queen and the mother of Duleep Singh, was born in Gujranwala in 1817.

The British captured the area in 1848\. Gujranwala was incorporated as a municipality in 1867, connected by rail to the rest of British India in 1881, and given its clock tower, the Ghanta Ghar, in 1906\. Riots erupted here in April 1919 after the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar, among the most violent of the response across British India, and the city was subjected to aerial bombardment. Partition in 1947 brought some of the worst rioting in Punjab: large parts of Hindu and Sikh localities were attacked, a refugee train was attacked near Kamoke with 340 killed, and by March 1948 over 300,000 Muslim refugees from Amritsar, Patiala and Ludhiana had been resettled in the district.

## People

Gujranwala holds a double distinction in Punjabi memory. It is the birthplace of Maharaja Ranjit Singh (1780 to 1839), the Lion of Punjab, whose haveli of birth still stands in the old city, and of Amrita Pritam (1919 to 2005), born here as Amrit Kaur, the most celebrated woman writer in Punjabi literature. Pritam left the city as a child after her mother's death and lived in Lahore until Partition in 1947, but Gujranwala remained the lost hometown she carried across the border. Her poem 'Ajj aakhaan Waris Shah nu' was addressed to the 18th-century poet Waris Shah. Hari Singh Nalwa shaped the city's streets, and Jind Kaur was born here in 1817.

## What is Gujranwala known for?

Two things define modern Gujranwala: wrestling and industry. The city is nicknamed the City of Wrestlers, famous across Pakistan for its pehlwans, its food and its markets. It is Pakistan's third-largest industrial centre after Karachi and Faisalabad, contributing several percent of the national GDP. With Sialkot and Gujrat it forms the Golden Triangle of industrial cities with export-oriented economies, a centre of metalwork, hosiery, ceramics, textiles and electrical goods. Refugees from Ludhiana brought hosiery manufacturing after 1947, and the city's colonial-era metal-working industry grew into the giant it is today.

## Visiting

Gujranwala's old quarters still hold the haveli where Ranjit Singh was born in 1780, the Sheranwala Bagh with its Baradari, and the tomb of Maha Singh, Ranjit Singh's father. The Ghanta Ghar clock tower marks the centre of the city built in 1906, and the railway station dates from the British era. The city is served by rail and road links to Lahore and Peshawar, and the Sialkot-Lahore Motorway, opened in 2020, passes nearby.

## Today

Modern Gujranwala is a metropolis of 2,511,118 people by the 2023 census, the fourth-largest city in Punjab province and the fifth-largest in Pakistan. Punjabi is spoken by nearly 89 percent of its people, with Urdu and Pashto also heard. Satellite Town was laid out in 1950 for wealthy refugees, Model Town followed in the 1960s, and industry boomed through the 1970s and 1980s. In 1947 the city had 39 registered factories; by 1961 there were 225\. New development continues, from an elevated urban expressway to higher-learning institutions, while beneath the factories and bazaars the city carries the layered history of the misl era, the Sikh Empire and the literary renaissance.
