Jandey is a village of Dinanagar tehsil in Gurdaspur district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Gurdaspur, about 14 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Dorangala community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 027925, and it covers 99 hectares. ## Population and households The 2011 census counted 558 people in Jandey: 267 men and 291 women, living in 102 households, an average of about 5.5 people per household. Spread over its 99 hectares, the population density works out to about 564 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1090 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 58, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 97 people, about 17 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded. Literacy in 2011 stood at 78.2 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 86.21 per cent and women at 71.27 per cent. The census recorded 123 workers, about 22 per cent of the village. Of the 122 main workers, the largest group, 53, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 48 cultivators on their own land and 21 agricultural labourers. A further 1 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year. ## Land and farming Farming covers most of Jandey's land. Of the village's 99 hectares, 89 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 78 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (9 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (69 hectares). About 10 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds.
