Purowal Araian is a village of Gurdaspur tehsil in Gurdaspur district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Gurdaspur, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Gurdaspur community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 028152, and it covers 149 hectares. ## Population and households The 2011 census counted 1,030 people in Purowal Araian: 547 men and 483 women, living in 157 households, an average of about 6.6 people per household. Spread over its 149 hectares, the population density works out to about 691 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 883 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 121, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 57 people, about 6 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded. Literacy in 2011 stood at 82.4 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 87.58 per cent and women at 76.53 per cent. The census recorded 290 workers, about 28 per cent of the village. Of the 265 main workers, the largest group, 113, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 101 cultivators on their own land and 48 agricultural labourers.
