Rome stands in the central western part of the Italian peninsula, along the shores of the Tiber valley, and its history spans 28 centuries: capital in turn of the Roman Kingdom, the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire, then of the Papal States, and since 1871 the capital of Italy. It is called the Eternal City, its historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Vatican City, the smallest country in the world and the seat of the worldwide Catholic Church, sits enclaved inside its boundaries, the only example of a country within a city. Rome is also the seat of the Italian government, of United Nations agencies such as the Food and Agriculture Organization, and of the Cinecitta film studios. Punjabis and other Indians live in Rome for the reasons people live in any capital: work, study, family and the institutions of a state. The Ministry of Labour figures show the modern pattern nationally: of the Indian citizens who entered Italy in 2022, 44.1 per cent came for family reasons, 36.8 per cent for work and 12.4 per cent for study, a study share far above the non-EU average. Italy keeps no census of religion or ethnicity, so there is no official count of Sikhs or Punjabis in Rome, and this page invents none. What is counted is citizenship and country of birth. The Italian Ministry of Labour and Social Policies, in its 2023 report on the Indian community, put Indians legally residing in Italy at 164,419 on 1 January 2023, found Lazio the second region of Indian settlement with 21.2 per cent of the community, and named the metropolitan city of Rome as the largest Indian community in the country, over 20,000 people, ahead of Latina and Brescia at about 13,000 each. Inside Rome city itself, people born in India numbered 11,759 in 2025, the eighth largest foreign country of birth, in a city where immigrants make up 14.7 per cent of the population. For Sikhs the only figures are national estimates: about 220,000 Sikhs in Italy in 2023, the second largest Sikh population in Europe after the United Kingdom. ## Neighbourhoods and everyday life Rome's best known immigrant quarter is the Esquilino, off Termini railway station, which has grown into a largely immigrant neighbourhood whose residents come from more than a hundred countries, full of international restaurants and wholesale shops. Rome's Indians are not confined to one district, though: this is a capital city community, layered over decades, with families in the eastern suburbs along the great radial roads as well as around the centre, Indian grocery and sweet shops, travel agents serving the Punjab routes, and remittance and phone shops doing the quiet connective work of diaspora life. Rome also holds India's diplomatic presence in Italy and the offices any migrant eventually needs, one more reason the capital draws people that the farm provinces do not. ## Gurdwaras and community life The national gurdwara list records two temples in Rome itself, Gurudwara Shri Guru Nanak Darbar and Gurdwara Singh Sabha, among about 60 gurdwaras across Italy. They carry the weekly rhythm of the capital's Punjabi community: Sunday diwans, langar, Punjabi classes and help for newcomers finding work, housing and paperwork in a bureaucratic capital. The tie between Punjab and Rome is older than the modern migration: Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala visited Rome in 1935, and in 1960 Rome hosted the Summer Olympics at which the Punjabi sprinter [Milkha Singh](https://jugti.com/kosh/people/milkha-singh/) finished fourth in the 400 metres, the race that made him a legend at home. Rome is the Eternal City, a capital of empires, popes and republics, and for Punjabis it is also the biggest Indian city in Italy: over 20,000 Indians in its metropolitan area, two gurdwaras, and a community built on work, study and family rather than the farm.
