Buraj Hassan is a village of Phillaur tehsil in Jalandhar district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Nurmahal, about 12 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Nurmahal community development block and is served by the Burj Hassan gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 030015, and it covers 375 hectares. ## Population and households The 2011 census counted 764 people in Buraj Hassan: 369 men and 395 women, living in 147 households, an average of about 5.2 people per household. Spread over its 375 hectares, the population density works out to about 204 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1070 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 114, about 15 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 705 people, about 92 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded. Literacy in 2011 stood at 54.62 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 59.03 per cent and women at 50.59 per cent. The census recorded 240 workers, about 31 per cent of the village. Of the 221 main workers, the largest group, 150, were agricultural labourers, ahead of 63 cultivators on their own land and 5 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 19 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year. ## Land and farming Farming covers most of Buraj Hassan's land. Of the village's 375 hectares, 342 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (342 hectares).
