Kangniwal (Phillaur) is a village of Phillaur tehsil in Jalandhar district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Nurmahal, about 16 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Rurka Kalan community development block and is served by the Kangniwal gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 030243, and it covers 257 hectares. ## Population and households The 2011 census counted 1,180 people in Kangniwal (Phillaur): 617 men and 563 women, living in 265 households, an average of about 4.5 people per household. Spread over its 257 hectares, the population density works out to about 459 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 912 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 79, about 7 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 473 people, about 40 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded. Literacy in 2011 stood at 83.11 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 85.44 per cent and women at 80.6 per cent. The census recorded 380 workers, about 32 per cent of the village. Of the 364 main workers, the largest group, 187, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 134 other workers in trade, transport and services and 35 agricultural labourers. A further 16 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year. ## Land and farming Farming covers most of Kangniwal (Phillaur)'s land. Of the village's 257 hectares, 225 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (225 hectares).
