Manak rai is a village of Jalandhar West tehsil in Jalandhar district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Bhogpur, about 8 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Bhogpur community development block and is served by the Manak Rai gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 030599, and it covers 370 hectares. ## Population and households The 2011 census counted 2,056 people in Manak rai: 1,024 men and 1,032 women, living in 440 households, an average of about 4.7 people per household. Spread over its 370 hectares, the population density works out to about 556 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1008 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 172, about 8 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 841 people, about 41 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded. Literacy in 2011 stood at 84.34 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 87.7 per cent and women at 81.03 per cent. The census recorded 537 workers, about 26 per cent of the village. Of the 517 main workers, the largest group, 318, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 144 cultivators on their own land and 51 agricultural labourers. A further 20 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year. ## Land and farming Farming covers most of Manak rai's land. Of the village's 370 hectares, 330 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (330 hectares). About 40 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 10 hours a day. Education in the village runs through one government primary school and one government middle school, so children can study in the village up to Class 8\.
