Sarangwal is a village of Shahkot tehsil in Jalandhar district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Shahkot, about 2 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Shahkot community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 029739, and it covers 140 hectares. ## Population and households The 2011 census counted 789 people in Sarangwal: 414 men and 375 women, living in 167 households, an average of about 4.7 people per household. Spread over its 140 hectares, the population density works out to about 564 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 906 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 82, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 515 people, about 65 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded. Literacy in 2011 stood at 74.82 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 80.65 per cent and women at 68.36 per cent. The census recorded 325 workers, about 41 per cent of the village. Of the 251 main workers, the largest group, 154, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 56 agricultural labourers and 37 cultivators on their own land. A further 74 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year. ## Land and farming Farming covers most of Sarangwal's land.
