Talwandi Butian is a village of Shahkot tehsil in Jalandhar district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Shahkot, about 6 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Shahkot community development block and is served by the Talwandi Butian, Rajewal, Rajewal Khurd gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 029744, and it covers 874 hectares. ## Population and households The 2011 census counted 2,889 people in Talwandi Butian: 1,480 men and 1,409 women, living in 535 households, an average of about 5.4 people per household. Spread over its 874 hectares, the population density works out to about 331 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 952 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 353, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,997 people, about 69 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded. Literacy in 2011 stood at 66.8 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 74.67 per cent and women at 58.42 per cent. The census recorded 951 workers, about 33 per cent of the village. Of the 930 main workers, the largest group, 429, were agricultural labourers, ahead of 401 cultivators on their own land and 82 other workers in trade, transport and services.
