Khem Karan is a town and nagar panchayat in Tarn Taran district of Punjab's Majha region, close to the Pakistan border. With a 2011 population of 13,446, it is known for the 1965 Battle of Asal Uttar, fought from 8 to 10 September 1965, when Indian forces destroyed over 100 Pakistani tanks. The battlefield's 'Patton Nagar' memorial stands here.

## Where is Khem Karan?

Khem Karan is a town in the southernmost part of Tarn Taran district, in Punjab's Majha region, a few kilometres from the India-Pakistan border. It lies about 60 km south of Amritsar, 56 km southwest of Tarn Taran Sahib city and 55 km north of Firozpur. The town is a nagar panchayat with 13 wards, and its PIN code is 143419.

## History: a frontier town cut off by Partition

Khem Karan is an old town that was visited by Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji. Before Partition it lay in Lahore district, a busy frontier town on the Kasur-Amritsar railway, with Khem Karan as its second station. People moved freely to Kasur, 8 km away, and to Ferozepur, 35 km away.

Partition changed everything. The town's Muslim residents migrated to Kasur, now in Pakistan, while families from nearby villages like Nathuwala, Qadiwind, Rohiwal and Sehjra moved in. When India and Pakistan imposed border controls in 1953 and tightened them in 1965, Khem Karan was cut off from both its old neighbours: Kasur lay across the border, and the road to Ferozepur now had to loop 70 km around Pakistani territory. The town became a border outpost, and its famous stepwells were eventually demolished.

## The 1965 war: Asal Uttar and Patton Nagar

Khem Karan's name is written into military history. On 8 September 1965, during the Indo-Pakistani war, Pakistan's 1st Armoured Division and 11th Infantry Division pushed toward the town, aiming to capture Amritsar and the bridge over the Beas river toward Jalandhar. Indian forces fell back and dug in around the village of Asal Uttar, forming a horseshoe-shaped defence under Brigadier Thomas Theogaraj.

On the night before the battle, Indian troops flooded the sugarcane fields around Asal Uttar, turning the ground to swamp. At dawn the Pakistani Patton tanks advanced into the trap and bogged down. From 8 to 10 September the fighting raged; Indian forces destroyed over 100 Pakistani tanks, including Pattons, Shermans and Chaffees, and captured more than 40\. The battlefield earned the name 'Patton Nagar', the graveyard of Pattons.

The battle's most famous hero was Company Quartermaster Havildar Abdul Hamid of 4 Grenadiers. On 10 September, with a recoilless gun mounted on a jeep, he knocked out Pakistani tanks one after another before being mortally wounded by enemy fire. He was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest gallantry award. Khem Karan itself was captured by Pakistani forces during the fighting.

## Geography and people

The town stands on the flat Majha plain at about 194 metres above sea level, in wheat and paddy country. The 2011 census counted 13,446 residents, up from 11,940 in 2001\. About 68% of the people are Sikh, 25% Hindu and 6% Christian, with small Muslim, Buddhist and Jain communities. Literacy among residents aged seven and above is 61.5%, below the Punjab average, and Scheduled Castes form about 38% of the population. The Border Security Force has a visible presence, and border life shapes the town's rhythms.

## What is there to see?

The Asal Uttar war memorial, maintained by the Indian Army, honours the soldiers of 1965 and draws visitors through the year. Captured Pakistani Patton tanks are displayed at Patton Nagar near Khem Karan. The memorial of Abdul Hamid at nearby Cheema village is a place of pilgrimage for many; an annual memorial sports event is held here in September to mark the battle.

The town also has older layers: the mazaar of the Sufi saint Pir Baba Sheikh Brahm, where a fair is held twice a year, and old gurdwaras. Government schools for boys and girls and a civil hospital serve the town.

## Getting there

Khem Karan has its own railway station on the Amritsar-Patti-Khem Karan line, which is being extended toward Mallanwala Khas with a new rail-cum-road bridge over the Sutlej. National Highway 354 connects the town to Amritsar, Dera Baba Nanak and Gurdaspur to the north, and to Firozpur and Malout to the south. The nearest international airport is Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport at Amritsar, about 75 km away; the government's battlefield-tourism portal lists the Amritsar to Asal Uttar route at 75 km.
