Lopoke Tehsil is a tehsil of Amritsar district in the Majha region of Punjab, India, named after the large village of Lopoke in the Chogawan area west of Amritsar city. It is a rural border belt of villages and farmland along the Pakistan frontier, administered in the district's current listing as one of six tehsils. Majha is the historic heartland of Punjab between the Ravi and the Beas, and Amritsar district fills the Bari Doab, the tract between those two rivers. Lopoke lies on the western side of that plain, where the district's upland gives way toward the floodplain of the Ravi in the west, at an average elevation of about 200 metres. The international border with Pakistan runs along the district's north and west, so the tehsil's fields and villages sit in the last belt of Indian Punjab before the frontier. Its headquarters village stands about 24 kilometres by road west of Amritsar city and about 15 kilometres from Ajnala, the tehsil town to its north. The tehsil's present shape is newer than the census that describes its people. In the Census of 2011, Lopoke and the villages around it were enumerated inside Ajnala tehsil, one of the four tehsils the district then had, and census village records still file Lopoke village under Ajnala. The district's current administrative listing names six tehsils: Ajnala, Amritsar I, Amritsar II, Baba Bakala, Majitha and Lopoke. Below the tehsil, rural development runs through the Chogawan community development block, one of ten blocks in the district's current listing, and each village is run by its elected gram panchayat: Lopoke village itself is divided between the Lopoke and Preet Nagar panchayats. ## The headquarters village of Lopoke Lopoke village, which gives the tehsil its name, is a large village by any Punjab measure. Census based records give it village code 037213, a geographical area of 1,184 hectares and the PIN code 143109, with Raja Sansi as its nearest town. The Census of 2011 counted 6,119 people in 1,185 households there, 3,272 men and 2,847 women, a sex ratio of 870 women per 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 752, and Scheduled Castes numbered 2,026 people, 33.11 percent of the village. Its recorded literacy rate in 2011 was 64.97 percent, with male literacy at 67.90 percent and female literacy at 61.62 percent, below the district rate of that census but ahead of the wider Chogawan block. Work records tell the farming story plainly: of 2,023 workers in the village, 1,944 were main workers, and among the workers 542 were cultivators working their own land and 259 were agricultural labourers. For daily services the village is better equipped than most: directories based on the census record a bank, an ATM and a post office in the village, along with a health sub centre, a primary health centre and a community health centre, so the headquarters village works as a small service centre for the settlements around it. ## Villages and border-belt life Jugti's own tehsil directory currently counts 125 villages under Lopoke, a countryside of compact settlements each set in its own farmland. In prose the pattern is set by villages such as Bhindi Saidan, counted at 6,791 people in 2011, Jagdev Kalan at 4,554 and Sarangra at 3,536, with Lopoke village itself among the largest of them. Those 2011 figures were recorded under Ajnala tehsil, which then covered this whole north western corner of the district, and they remain the last full count of these villages. The development block tells the same story at a wider scale. Chogawan block, whose headquarters village of Chogawan counted 2,342 people in 448 households in 2011, was recorded with 113 villages and a population of 148,134, around 27 percent of them Scheduled Castes. It was described as a predominantly rural block sharing a large border with Pakistan, with no industry and a literacy rate of 59 percent against a district average of 77 percent. Life here is therefore village life first: panchayats, schools, gurdwaras and the daily run to the mandi, lived out in the shadow of the frontier. The border has shaped who lives here. The Chogawan account records that a big chunk of the block's Mazhabi population arrived as refugees in 1947 from Muridke and Kamoke, on the Pakistan side, while the area's native Arain and Muslim Gujjar families left for Pakistan and settled mainly around Sialkot. That exchange of populations at Partition is part of family memory across the tehsil, and it is one reason this countryside, so close to Amritsar city, still feels like a frontier society of farming families. ## Land and farming The land is the flat alluvial plain of the Bari Doab, on the Ravi side of the district. Amritsar district as a whole counts about 2.17 lakh hectares of cultivated land, with some 97 percent of the cropped area irrigated, and Lopoke's fields follow that district pattern of intensive, watered farming. Wheat and paddy are the district's major crops, basmati rice takes a large share of the kharif season, and sugarcane, maize, pulses, oilseeds, vegetables and fruit fill out the rotation. Chogawan block's record is simpler and starker: the majority of its population is engaged in farming, wheat growing is named as the main agriculture product of its headquarters village, and the block has no industry to balance the fields. The headquarters village's own work profile, with cultivators the largest single group among its main workers, matches that picture. Grain from these villages moves toward the grain markets of the district's towns, and the farm calendar, paddy in the summer heat and wheat through the winter, still sets the rhythm of the tehsil. ## People and faith Because the Census of 2011 counted this area inside Ajnala tehsil, the clearest people figures for the tehsil's countryside come in that frame. Ajnala tehsil counted 442,711 people in 2011, 89.33 percent of them rural, with a sex ratio of 899 women per 1,000 men and a literacy rate of 63.35 percent. Sikhs made up 86.85 percent of that population, Christians a notable 6.72 percent and Hindus 5.97 percent, while Scheduled Castes stood at 37.02 percent. The Christian share, far above the district figure of 2.18 percent, marks this border belt out within Majha. The smaller frames agree. Chogawan Census Town, the one urban settlement recorded in the block area in 2011, counted 5,416 people in 1,100 houses with a literacy rate of 77.13 percent and a sex ratio of 882, and its people were 81.96 percent Sikh, 15.47 percent Hindu and 1.62 percent Christian. Punjabi is spoken throughout the tehsil, and the Majhi dialect of this region is regarded as the standard form of the language. Gurdwaras stand across its villages, and churches serve the Christian families of the belt. ## Getting to Lopoke Tehsil Roads do the work here. Lopoke village is about 24 kilometres by road from Amritsar city, a drive of roughly 30 to 60 minutes, and about 15 kilometres from Ajnala, and directories record an all weather road with public and private bus services running in the village itself. From the headquarters village, local roads fan out toward Chogawan, Ajnala and the border villages, and buses are the everyday public transport of the whole tehsil. There is no railway station in Lopoke village, and published listings disagree on which station is nearest, so most rail travellers simply head for Amritsar Junction, the district's main station. Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport at Raja Sansi, named after the founder of Amritsar, lies about 14 kilometres by air from Lopoke village, which makes this border countryside closer to an international airport than to most city services. ##
