Kanian Hussaini is a village in Jagraon tehsil of Ludhiana district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Phillaur, about 20 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Sidhwan Bet community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 033856, and it covers 853 hectares. ## Population and households The 2011 census counted 1,495 people in Kanian Hussaini: 761 men and 734 women, living in 248 households, an average of about 6.0 people per household. Spread over its 853 hectares, the population density works out to about 175 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 965 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 252, about 17 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,437 people, about 96 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded. Literacy in 2011 stood at 57.92 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 71.65 per cent and women at 43.59 per cent. The census recorded 694 workers, about 46 per cent of the village. Of the 355 main workers, the largest group, 156, were agricultural labourers, ahead of 146 cultivators on their own land and 52 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 339 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year. ## Land and farming Farming covers most of Kanian Hussaini's land. Of the village's 853 hectares, 652 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (503 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (149 hectares). About 201 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds.
