Chakerian is a village of Mansa tehsil in Mansa district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Mansa, about 2 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Mansa community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 036092, and it covers 763 hectares. ## Population and households The 2011 census counted 2,622 people in Chakerian: 1,394 men and 1,228 women, living in 535 households, an average of about 4.9 people per household. Spread over its 763 hectares, the population density works out to about 344 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 881 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 306, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,342 people, about 51 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded. Literacy in 2011 stood at 57.64 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 63.88 per cent and women at 50.81 per cent. The census recorded 972 workers, about 37 per cent of the village. Of the 742 main workers, the largest group, 305, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 225 cultivators on their own land and 210 agricultural labourers. A further 230 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year. ## Land and farming Farming covers most of Chakerian's land.
