Chatwal is a village in Pathankot tehsil of Pathankot district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Pathankot, about 11 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Dhar Kalan community development block and is served by the Chhatwal,Defence Colony gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 027427, and it covers 359 hectares. ## Population and households The 2011 census counted 2,567 people in Chatwal: 1,308 men and 1,259 women, living in 535 households, an average of about 4.8 people per household. Spread over its 359 hectares, the population density works out to about 715 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 963 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 267, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 810 people, about 32 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded. Literacy in 2011 stood at 87.13 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 90.81 per cent and women at 83.29 per cent. The census recorded 662 workers, about 26 per cent of the village. Of the 531 main workers, the largest group, 490, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 22 cultivators on their own land and 17 agricultural labourers. A further 131 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year. ## Land and farming Farming covers most of Chatwal's land. Of the village's 359 hectares, 93 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (42 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (50 hectares). About 262 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 6 hours a day. The census recorded 24 cultivators and 69 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders. ## Schools and facilities The Census 2011 Village Directory gives the fullest picture of village facilities.
