Sarkara is a village of Patiala tehsil in Patiala district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Sanaur, about 12 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Bhunerheri community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 036687, and it covers 139 hectares. ## Population and households The 2011 census counted 360 people in Sarkara: 185 men and 175 women, living in 60 households, an average of about 6.0 people per household. Spread over its 139 hectares, the population density works out to about 259 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 946 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 59, about 16 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 48 people, about 13 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded. Literacy in 2011 stood at 65.78 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 70.89 per cent and women at 60.14 per cent. The census recorded 118 workers, about 33 per cent of the village. Of the 85 main workers, the largest group, 77, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 6 cultivators on their own land and 2 agricultural labourers. A further 33 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year. ## Land and farming Farming covers most of Sarkara's land.
