Patna Sahib is the name Sikhs give to Patna, the capital of Bihar in eastern India, because the city holds Takht Sri Harmandir Sahib, the shrine marking the birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Born here on 22 December 1666, the tenth Sikh Guru spent his first years in this ancient Ganges city.

## Why do Sikhs call it Patna Sahib?

Sikhs call the city Patna Sahib because Takht Sri Harmandir Sahib, one of the five takhts or seats of Sikh religious authority, stands here where Guru Gobind Singh Ji was born. The Sikh Encyclopedia notes that sahib is added to the name as a title of dignity and honour, and the old city railway station is also officially named Patna Sahib.

## A 2,500-year-old city: Pataliputra

Ancient Patna was Pataliputra, founded in 490 BCE, the city account says, by the king of Magadha. It became the capital of the Magadha empire under the Haryanka, Nanda, Mauryan, Shunga, Gupta and Pala dynasties, home to scholars such as Aryabhata, Vatsyayana and Chanakya. In the Mauryan period, around 300 BCE, its population was about 400,000.

Sher Shah Suri revived the town in the 16th century, Prince Azim renamed it Azimabad in 1704, and in 1912 it became the capital of Bihar and Orissa province. Today Patna is the capital and largest city of Bihar and the seat of the Patna High Court. The modern city stands mainly on the southern bank of the Ganges, straddling the Son, Gandak and Punpun rivers, about 35 kilometres long.

## [Guru Nanak Dev Ji](https://jugti.com/kosh/religion/guru-nanak-dev-ji/) and Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji in Patna

Guru Nanak Dev Ji visited Pataliputra on his first eastern journey in the early 16th century. He stayed first at the house of Bhagat Jaitamal, now Gurdwara Gai Ghat, also called Pahila Bara, and then at the house of Salis Rai Johri, a jeweller who became his devotee and turned his palatial house into a dharamsala. Accounts differ on the length of the stay, giving about three months in the Sikh Encyclopedia and about four months in the Discover Sikhism account. Before leaving, Guru Nanak Dev Ji placed the congregation in the care of Adhraka, Salis Rai's servant, and the centre became known as the Chhoti Sangat.

In 1666 [Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji](https://jugti.com/kosh/religion/guru-tegh-bahadur-ji/) reached Patna with his family on his preaching tour to the east. He alighted first at the Bari Sangat at Gai Ghat and was brought in procession to the Chhoti Sangat in Salis Rai's house, where Raja Fateh Chand Maini had built a new house above the old dharamsala for the Guru's family. He left his family there in the care of his brother-in-law Kirpal Chand and travelled on to Bengal and Assam.

## The birth of Guru Gobind Singh Ji

[Guru Gobind Singh Ji](https://jugti.com/kosh/religion/guru-gobind-singh-ji/) was born in that house on 22 December 1666, named Gobind Rai, the son of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji and Mata Gujri. His father was still travelling in the east when the news reached him. The tenth Guru later recalled the city in his autobiography, the Bachitra Natak, in words rendered as: I was born at Patna city. The child spent his early years playing with companions on the Ganges bank at the ghat now marked by Gurdwara Gobind Ghat, also called Kangan Ghat, where tradition tells of him throwing a gold bangle into the river and blessing Pandit Shiv Dutt.

The family's stay ended when Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji returned from Assam. The Sikh Encyclopedia dates his meeting with the Patna sangat and his young son at Guru Ka Bagh to 17 April 1670, and shrine accounts place the departure in 1670, while Discover Sikhism has the Guru return in April 1671 and send for his family afterwards, so the sources state the departure year differently. The family's first halt west was at Danapur, remembered by Gurdwara Handi Sahib, and they travelled on to Kiratpur and Chakk Nanaki in Punjab, the town that became Anandpur Sahib.

## Takht Sri Harmandir Sahib

The shrine on the birthplace, Takht Sri Harmandir Sahib, also called Takhat Sri Harimandir Ji, was described by the visitor Charles Wilkins in 1781\. After fire damaged the building, Maharaja Ranjit Singh rebuilt it, in a rebuilding the shrine accounts date to 1837 to 1839, and the rulers of Patiala, Jind and Faridkot jointly added rooms and a gateway in 1887\. The 1934 Bihar earthquake seriously damaged it again. One summary dates the rebuilding that followed to 1948 to 1957, while the detailed shrine accounts give the present building's construction as taken up on 19 November 1954 and completed in December 1957, through kar seva under Sant Nischal Singh and Sant Kartar Singh. The result is the five-storeyed white marble edifice pilgrims see today, with a ribbed lotus dome over the sanctum.

The inner sanctum represents the room of the Guru's birth, with a circumambulatory passage and a large hall in front, and three canopied seats holding the Guru Granth Sahib and the Dasam Granth. Relics preserved at the Takht, as listed by the shrine accounts, include the Bare Sahib, a Guru Granth Sahib bearing the signature of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the Chhabi Sahib oil painting of the young Guru, the Panghura Sahib cradle with four gold-plated stands, a small saif or sword, four iron arrows, an earthen goli, a small chakri, khanda and baghnakh, a wooden comb, two iron chakers, ivory sandals of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, sandalwood sandals of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, and a book of hukamnamas of both Gurus. Mahants managed the shrine until the last died in 1930; a committee supervised by the District Judge of Patna then took over, a new constitution followed in 1956, and today the Takhat Sri Harimandir Ji, Patna Sahib Prabandhak Committee runs the Takht.

## The other gurdwaras of Patna

Several other shrines keep the city's Sikh story. Gurdwara Gai Ghat, the Pahila Bara or Bari Sangat in Alamganj, marks Bhagat Jaitamal's house where Guru Nanak Dev Ji first stayed, and displays relics including Mardana's rebeck. About 3 kilometres east of the Takht, Gurdwara Guru Ka Bagh stands in the garden of Nawabs Rahim Bakhsh and Karim Bakhsh, where Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji alighted on his return from Assam and met the sangat and his son; the Takht committee built its present building in 1971 to 1972, and a dried stump of the tree under which the Guru sat is still kept. Across the lane from the Takht, Gurdwara Bal Leela Maini Sangat occupies the house of Raja Fateh Chand Maini, where tradition tells of the child Gobind Rai sitting in the Raja's wife's lap; its prasad is still boiled salted gram. Close to the Takht on the Ganges bank stands Gurdwara Gobind Ghat, called Kangan Ghat, and about 20 kilometres west at Danapur, Gurdwara Handi Sahib marks the family's first halt, where an old lady, named in the chronicles variously as Jamna or Pardhani, served khichdi from a handi, an earthen pot, to the whole party.

## Prakash Parv, the modern city and getting there

The Guru's birth anniversary, Prakash Parv, is Patna's greatest Sikh festival. Its largest celebration came with the 350th Prakash Parv, held from 30 December 2016 to 5 January 2017 and organised by the Tourism Department of the Government of Bihar: tent cities rose near Kangan Ghat, the main events filled Gandhi Maidan, Patna Ghat station was reopened for pilgrims, a three-day holiday was declared, and an exhibition on the Guru's life opened at the Bihar Museum.

Beyond the Takht, the modern city counted 1,684,222 people within the corporation limits in the 2011 census. The census metropolitan listing gives the urban agglomeration as 2,049,156, while some summaries print 2,046,652, and this page keeps the two frames separate rather than merging them. Hindi was the first language of 65.94 percent in 2011 and Magahi of 18.04 percent. Landmarks include the Golghar, the beehive-shaped granary completed on 20 July 1786 to Captain John Garstin's design, the Bihar Museum on Bailey Road, opened in part in August 2015 and in full in October 2017 with the Didarganj Yakshi among its treasures, and the Patan Devi temples in the old city, revered as a Shakti Pitha and linked by the city account to the name Patna itself.

Pilgrims arrive at Patna Sahib railway station in Patna City, close to the Takht, or at Patna Junction, the main station on the Howrah to Delhi main line. Jay Prakash Narayan Airport, IATA PAT, a customs airport run by the Airports Authority of India, links Patna with Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata, and its new terminal was inaugurated on 29 May 2025\. The Buddhist and Jain pilgrimage centres lie within a day's road journey: Wikivoyage lists Vaishali at about 40 kilometres, Nalanda at about 90, Rajgir at about 103 and Bodh Gaya at about 130, while a Buddhist Circuit guide gives Bodh Gaya at about 110 kilometres, so distances vary by route and source.
