## Where is Patran Tehsil?

Patran Tehsil is a tehsil of Patiala district in the Malwa region of Punjab, India, headquartered in the rice market town of Patran, about 60 kilometres south of Patiala city. One of the district's six tehsils, it administers 68 villages and two towns across 405 square kilometres of flat farming country toward the Haryana border.

Patiala district stands in the south east of Punjab, surrounded by Fatehgarh Sahib, Rupnagar and Mohali to the north, Fatehgarh Sahib and Sangrur to the west, the Ambala and Kurukshetra districts of Haryana to the east and Kaithal district of Haryana to the south west. Patran is one of the district's six tehsils, alongside Patiala, Rajpura, Nabha, Samana and Dudhan Sadhan, and it holds the district's southern country. One village directory, onefivenine.com, notes that Patran's villages stand on the border of Patiala and Sangrur districts, with Andana tehsil of Sangrur to the south and the Haryana towns of Kaithal and Tohana within reach.

The tehsil's figures need one explanation. The Census of 2011 counted Patran Tehsil at 193,683 people in 36,526 households, over 405 square kilometres with a density of 478 people per square kilometre. The census listing on censusindia2011.com counts 68 villages and 2 towns in the tehsil, while VillageInfo's tehsil table counts 69 villages in 405.44 square kilometres: the two sources differ by one village, so this page uses the census count of 68 villages with the VillageInfo figure noted. The Jugti tehsil directory currently lists 75 village pages under Patran, counted in October 2026.

## The headquarters town of Patran

Patran town counted 27,963 people at the Census of 2011, administered by a municipal council across 15 wards in 5,489 houses. Children under six numbered 3,250, the sex ratio was 896 women per 1,000 men, and literacy was 79.18 percent, above the Punjab average of 75.84 percent, with male literacy at 84.00 percent and female literacy at 73.84 percent. Scheduled Castes were 17.19 percent of the town. The census town page reports the population growing steadily: 7,998 in 1981, 14,328 in 1991, 22,175 in 2001 and 27,963 in 2011.

The town's second urban centre is Ghagga, a nagar panchayat 8 kilometres away, with 10,162 people at the Census of 2011 in 1,925 houses across 11 wards. Together Patran and Ghagga make up the tehsil's urban population of 38,125, against a rural population of 155,558\. The PIN code for the headquarters town is 147105 and its vehicles carry the PB 72 series. One detail for careful readers: a figure of 38,125 sometimes appears as Patran town's own population, but the census frame shows it is the combined population of Patran and Ghagga, and this page uses the two towns' separate figures.

## From a princely village to a town

In the princely era Patran was only a small village. Local accounts, recorded on the town's Wikipedia pages, say it was known for a large lake called Bhupindra Sagar, built near Patran by Maharaja Bhupindra Singh of Patiala as a hunting lake. The same local tradition associates the village with the notorious Jagga Dacoit, who is said to have robbed the rich and helped the poor. An ancient dera known as Mai Dera, still standing among old trees and visited by many people, holds the tomb of Baba Sottewala and an ancient Shiva temple.

The town's modern administrative life began on 1 June 1970, when a notified area committee was constituted at Patran, taking charge of sanitation, water supply, street lighting, sewerage, cleanliness and the disposal of refuse. From the 1981 census figure of 7,998, the town grew to 27,963 by 2011, its civic body now a municipal council with 15 wards. The town is also known for the Shri Khatu Shyam Ji temple called Patran Dham, described as the second such temple built after the Khatu Mandir in Rajasthan. The earlier history of this country belongs to Patiala State: in the British era the district consisted of the two tehsils of Patiala and Rajpura, and after the integration of the princely states the reorganised district, then part of the Patiala and East Punjab States Union known as PEPSU, grew through the mergers of the 1950s before PEPSU itself merged into Punjab in 1956.

## Land, water and the rice mandi

Most of Patiala district is plain in the form of agricultural land, and Patran shares that flat alluvial character, sloping gently to the south west. The Central Ground Water Board's aquifer report for Patran Block describes the tract: principal crops of wheat, rice, maize and sugarcane, with vegetables and fodder as other crops, a gross cropped area of 636.91 square kilometres against a net sown area of 335.35 square kilometres, a cropping intensity of 190 percent, and irrigation resting on tube wells, 11,535 of them in the block, with only a small share of canal irrigation. The report categorises the block as over exploited, with a stage of groundwater development of 287 percent and a declining water table observed at Patran itself. Its suggested remedy is a shift of part of the paddy area to maize and soyabean. Note that the block's boundary is an administrative convenience, not the tehsil's boundary, so these figures describe the same country rather than the tehsil itself.

The town is known across the district for two trades. Patran is a big marketplace for rice, with more than 100 rice shellers working in and around the town, and it is known as a centre for car palaces, the used car bazaars that draw buyers from the surrounding districts. The same agricultural base shows in the town's road connections: it is linked with Dirba, Ghagga, Samana, Tohana, Kaithal, Delhi, Ludhiana, Patiala and Sangrur by maintained roads, trading its rice outward and its traffic inward.

## People, faith and villages

Punjabi is the language of the tehsil, in its Malwai form: at the Census of 2011, 89.61 percent of Patiala district spoke Punjabi as a first language, with Hindi at 7.79 percent. In faith the tehsil counted 53.39 percent Sikh, 44.39 percent Hindu and 1.42 percent Muslim in the same census. The tehsil's literacy was 55.74 percent, with male literacy at 61.34 percent and female literacy at 49.53 percent, and the sex ratio was 902 women per 1,000 men. Scheduled Castes were 36.45 percent of the tehsil's population.

The tehsil's villages are small to medium farming settlements, run through gram panchayats under the Patran development block, one of the district's ten blocks. The largest village is Shutrana, with 12,768 people at the Census of 2011, followed by Gulahar at 5,237, Kalbano at 4,932 and Arno at 4,688\. The headquarters town has its own rural twin, Patran Rural, a census village of 2,322 people standing about a kilometre from the town and falling, with its neighbouring villages, in the Shutrana assembly constituency. The tehsil also gives its name to the Patran assembly constituency, and all of the district's nine assembly seats are part of the Patiala Lok Sabha constituency.

## Getting to Patran Tehsil

The road carries this tehsil. Patran town is about 60 kilometres from Patiala, a journey of around an hour and forty minutes by road, about 127 kilometres from Chandigarh, and linked by maintained roads with Dirba, Ghagga, Samana, Tohana, Kaithal, Delhi, Ludhiana, Patiala and Sangrur. Bus services run through the town and connect its villages, and the tehsil's towns sit on the Patiala to Patran road network that feeds the rice trade.

The nearest railway station to the town is Sunam, about 30 kilometres away, with Lehra Gaga also listed as the nearest station for the tehsil's villages. Ghagga's nearest station is Lehragaga, 25 kilometres away. The nearest airport is Patiala airport, listed at an air distance of about 43 kilometres from the tehsil's villages. Inside the town, the municipal council's 15 wards, the bus stand, the grain and rice markets and the car bazaars make Patran the everyday centre for the villages around it, and its second town, Ghagga, carries its own share of the trade.
