Payal is a small historic town and tehsil headquarters in Ludhiana district of Punjab, India, about 35 kilometres southeast of Ludhiana city. Once called Sahibgarh, it is built around an eighteenth century fort, old temples and a grain market, and counted 7,923 residents in the 2011 census.

## Where is Payal?

Payal is in the eastern part of Ludhiana district, in the Malwa region of Punjab, just south of Doraha on the road between Ludhiana and Ambala. The municipal council puts it 35 kilometres from Ludhiana city. It is a tehsil headquarters and a sub divisional office town, so its courts, offices, hospital and market serve a wide rural circle. The tehsil as a whole held 213,545 people in the 2011 census across 442.8 square kilometres, and its other towns are Doraha, a municipal council, and Maloud, a nagar panchayat.

## History: Sahibgarh, a faqir's anklet and a Patiala fort

The municipal council's own profile calls Payal a historic town and traces its settlement back about 1,200 years. Its best known story is a local tradition the council records: about 770 years ago a Muslim faqir named Shah Hussain settled on a mound here, followers gathered around him, and when the ground was dug for houses an anklet, a payal, was found, which gave the place its name. The grave of Shah Hussain is still in the town.

The town was earlier known as Sahibgarh, named after Rani Sahib Kaur of Patiala State. The council profile dates its Mughal period to the years 1580 to 1585, under Akbar. In 1766 Maharaja Amar Singh of Patiala brought Payal into the Patiala state, and in 1771 he raised the town's fort, which the profile says was built with Mughal cooperation. The fort still stands, and a government girls high school now runs inside it.

Payal stayed part of Patiala State through the British period. After independence it moved through a quick series of homes: in 1948 it lay in Fatehgarh Sahib district of the PEPSU state, in 1953 that district was merged into Patiala, and in 1956 PEPSU itself was merged into Punjab. In November 1963 Payal was transferred to Ludhiana district, together with Doraha and 72 villages, and it has belonged to Ludhiana ever since.

## Geography and people

Payal stands on the flat eastern Ludhiana plain, in wheat, paddy and vegetable country that feeds the Ludhiana market. The town covers 8.53 square kilometres. Punjabi is the official language, and the regional dialect here is Puadhi, spoken across the eastern edge of the district.

The 2011 census counted 7,923 residents in 1,537 households across the town's 11 wards, up from 7,267 in 2001 and 5,852 in 1991\. Sikhs formed 63.6 percent of the town and Hindus 33.89 percent, with a small Muslim community of 1.79 percent. There were 870 women for every 1,000 men, and children under six numbered 855, about 11 percent of residents. Literacy stood at 78.32 percent, at 82.19 percent for men and 73.93 percent for women. Scheduled Castes formed 41.06 percent of the population, and 2,600 residents were recorded as workers, most of them in work through the year.

## What is Payal known for?

Payal is known first for its layered sacred geography, remarkable for so small a town. The municipal council lists 17 Hindu temples, about five gurdwaras, the mazars of Muslim holy figures and the samadhi of a queen within its streets. Its ancient temple of Shiva and Parvati and the Dasnam Akhara are named in the council profile, and the town's old temples are noted for their wall and roof paintings, among them the Mahadev Mandir.

It is known second as a working administrative town. The sub divisional offices, civil hospital, police station and tehsil complex bring the villages of the tehsil into Payal every working day, and its grain market handles the harvests around them. The council has also built the Shaheed Beant Singh Memorial Market in the town, named for the former chief minister long associated with this seat.

## Places of interest

The fort of 1771 is the town's defining landmark, even though its original form has been much altered over the centuries; a government girls high school runs within its walls today. Around it, a visitor can walk to the grave of Shah Hussain, the mazar of Baba Main Maula, and the old temples with their paintings. Just north lies Doraha, whose old sarai fort stands on the historic highway, and to the east is Khanna, whose grain market is one of the largest in the region. Sirhind, the historic city of Fatehgarh Sahib district, is also within an easy road journey south.

## Notable people and politics

Payal's seat in the Punjab assembly carries an outsized political history. Beant Singh, who became chief minister of Punjab in 1992, represented Payal repeatedly, first winning here in 1969 as an independent and later for the Congress. The municipal council notes that his home village, Kotli, lies about 4 kilometres from the town. Payal is assembly constituency number 67, reserved for Scheduled Castes, and part of the Fatehgarh Sahib Lok Sabha seat. Its present MLA is Manwinder Singh Gyaspura of the Aam Aadmi Party, elected in 2022.

## Getting there

Road is Payal's main link with the world. The town stands just south of Doraha on the Ludhiana to Ambala road, the old National Highway 1 corridor the council profile names, with buses and shared transport to Ludhiana, Doraha and Khanna. Ludhiana city, about 35 kilometres away, is the nearest large rail and air hub. The town's PIN code is 141416 and its vehicles carry the PB 55 registration series.
