Tapa, known across its district as Tapa Mandi, is a municipal council town in Barnala district of Punjab's Malwa region, on the Barnala to Bathinda road. Its grain market gives the town its name and its living. The 2011 census counted 23,248 residents in its 13 wards.

## Where is Tapa?

Tapa is a town in Barnala district in the Malwa region of Punjab, about 24 km southeast of Barnala city and 42 km northwest of Bathinda. It stands on the Barnala to Bathinda road, National Highway 7, at about 224 metres above sea level. Tapa is also a tehsil headquarters, so its courts, offices and market serve a wide circle of surrounding villages. The town is run by a municipal council divided into 13 wards.

## History: a market that became a town

Tapa grew up as a trading point on the road between Barnala and Bathinda, and its everyday name records that origin: Tapa Mandi, the grain market of Tapa. For generations, farmers from the villages around it have brought wheat, paddy and cotton here to sell, and the trade drew in commission agents, weighmen, transporters, labourers and shopkeepers, turning a road settlement into a town.

The railway strengthened that role. Tapa station, on the Bathinda to Rajpura line under the Ambala railway division, let the mandi ship grain to bigger markets and brought goods and travellers in. The town is also known locally for its old deras and gurdwaras, whose annual gatherings have long been part of its calendar. Administratively, Tapa belonged to Sangrur district until November 2006, when the new district of Barnala was formed and Tapa became one of its towns.

## Geography and people

The town stands on the flat Malwa plain in cotton, wheat and paddy country, and its rhythm follows the farming year: crowded roads and a packed mandi at harvest, a quieter pace between seasons. The Moga road also leaves Tapa toward Pakho Kenchian, tying it to the villages north of the town.

The 2011 census counted 23,248 residents, up from 18,917 in 2001, living in 4,516 households. Hindus formed about 58 percent of the town and Sikhs about 40 percent, with a small Muslim minority. There were 846 women for every 1,000 men, and children under six made up about 12 percent of residents. Literacy stood at 69.84 percent, at 73.86 percent for men and 65.13 percent for women. Scheduled Castes formed 32.20 percent of the population. Of the town's 8,469 workers recorded in 2011, most were in main work through the year, much of it tied to the mandi, trade and farming. Punjabi is the language of daily life.

## What is Tapa Mandi known for?

Tapa is known above all for its grain market. In the wheat and paddy seasons the mandi fills with tractor trolleys queued for auction, and the market supports a whole local economy of agents, labourers, truckers, tea stalls and shops. Local accounts describe Tapa as one of the stronger market economies in Barnala district, and the mandi, more than any single landmark, is the reason the town exists in its present form.

Its second claim on a visitor's attention is religious. The town's historic deras and gurdwaras draw congregations from the surrounding villages through the year, and their gatherings, melas and langars are when Tapa is at its busiest and most welcoming.

## Places of interest

There is no single monument that defines Tapa; the town itself is the sight. The grain market in full season, the old bazaar streets around the railway station, and the deras and gurdwaras each with their own following are what a visitor should see. Barnala city, with its own markets and the historic town of Bhadaur nearby, makes an easy trip from here, and the road south to Bathinda runs through classic Malwa farmland the whole way.

## Education

Tapa's schools serve the town and the villages of its tehsil. They include the Government Boys Senior Secondary School and the Government Girls Senior Secondary School, the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya at Dhilwan near the town, and private schools such as Holy Angels Public High School, Sarvhitkari Vidya Mandir, Shivalik Public Senior Secondary School and Guru Nanak Dev Public High School. For college study, most students travel to Barnala or Bathinda.

## Getting there

Tapa railway station, on the Bathinda to Rajpura line, connects the town by train toward Bathinda in one direction and Rajpura and Ambala in the other. By road, National Highway 7 runs straight through the town, with buses to Barnala, Bathinda, Moga and Mansa. The town's PIN code is 148108 and its vehicles carry the PB 73 registration series. The nearest large cities are Bathinda and Ludhiana, both within an easy road journey.
