Birmingham is a city and metropolitan borough in the West Midlands, England, the second largest city in Britain and the largest local authority district in England by population, with 1,144,900 residents in the 2021 census. Its Punjabi community centres on Handsworth and the Soho Road corridor in the northwest of the city: the census counted 33,126 Sikhs in Birmingham, served by a gurdwara complex of about 25,000 square metres on Soho Road and by one of the largest Vaisakhi celebrations in the world, in Handsworth Park.

## Where is Birmingham, and why do Punjabis live there?

Birmingham stands in the centre of the West Midlands region, the most inland major city in Britain, cut through by its canal network and built around the Bull Ring market place it has held since the twelfth century. A medieval market town became, through the Midlands Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution, a manufacturing city of thousands of small specialist workshops: by 1791 it was being hailed as the first manufacturing town in the world, and its nicknames, the City of a Thousand Trades and the Second City, come from that age.

Punjabi Birmingham grew from that industrial city. After the Second World War its foundries, factories and workshops drew workers from Punjab, as they drew workers from across the Commonwealth, and the community settled where the work and the housing were, above all in Handsworth in the northwest. By the early 1970s Sikh prayer gatherings were being held in Birmingham homes, and in 1977 the community opened a landmark gurdwara on Soho Road, the street that still anchors Punjabi life in the city. Birmingham is listed under [Punjabi places in the United Kingdom](https://jugti.com/kosh/places/united-kingdom/).

## What do the numbers say?

The 2021 census counted 1,144,900 people in Birmingham, up 6.7 per cent on 2011\. The Asian or Asian British group numbered 355,384 people, 31.0 per cent of the city, within which the Indian ethnic group numbered 66,519, 5.8 per cent. By religion, the census counted 33,126 Sikhs in Birmingham, 2.9 per cent of the city, a figure that has held steady across three censuses, from 28,592 in 2001 and 32,376 in 2011\. For scale, Christians were 34.0 per cent of the city and Muslims 29.9 per cent.

Birmingham sits inside Britain's second great Sikh heartland. Across the West Midlands region the 2021 census counted 172,398 Sikhs, 2.9 per cent of the region, out of 520,092 across England and Wales, and across the West Midlands Combined Authority area Sikhs were 5.1 per cent of the population. For the Punjabi language, this entry is precise about the limit of the published figures: no Birmingham only Punjabi main language total appears in the census sources opened for this entry, and none is invented here. What is verified is the regional picture: the Combined Authority's State of the Region report, working from the 2021 census, lists Punjabi first among the languages spoken in its area other than English.

## Handsworth and Soho Road

Soho Road runs northwest from the city centre through Handsworth, and its Punjabi character is built around one institution. The Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha, the GNNSJ, grew under the spiritual guidance of Sant Baba Puran Singh Ji, who died in 1983, and the leadership of Bhai Sahib Norang Singh Ji, who died in 1995, and the Jatha traces its Birmingham gatherings to the smagams held across the city from 1968 onward. In 1977 the Jatha opened its first gurdwara at 18 to 20 Soho Road, putting its motto of Nishkam Sewa, selfless service without desire for personal gain, into practice.

The gurdwara that grew on that site is a complex of about 25,000 square metres over four storeys, with five main Darbar halls, three Langar halls and approximately 100 rooms for the sangat who stay overnight. Its main Darbar is used for continuous Akhand Path recital. The Jatha's civic arm, the Nishkam Centre on Soho Road, created by the same charity, works on community and economic wellbeing and interfaith dialogue, and its chair, Bhai Sahib Dr Mohinder Singh, received the Guru Nanak Interfaith Prize for promoting interfaith harmony.

## Vaisakhi and Punjabi culture

Each spring Birmingham holds one of the largest Vaisakhi celebrations in the world in Handsworth Park. In 2013 around 90,000 people packed the park for the festival, organised by the Council of Sikh Gurdwaras with the city council, after two processions arrived from the temples in Hockley and Smethwick, each led by the Panj Pyare in ceremonial dress, with langar served to all. The Nishkam Media Centre put the park celebration at some 60,000 to 70,000 participants in 2014, the same year the Library of Birmingham was lit orange for Vaisakhi, described at the time as the first time a public building in the United Kingdom had been lit for a Sikh sacred festival.

Birmingham also gave Punjabi music one of its British sounds. [Apache Indian](https://jugti.com/kosh/people/apache-indian/), born Steven Kapur in Handsworth in 1967, created bhangramuffin by fusing bhangra with raggamuffin reggae, and the DJ and producer [Bally Sagoo](https://jugti.com/kosh/people/bally-sagoo/), raised in Birmingham, fused Bollywood and bhangra with hip hop and reggae for a generation of British Asian listeners. Both sounds were made in the same northwest Birmingham streets the gurdwaras serve.

Birmingham is the West Midlands anchor of Punjabi Britain: a steady census community of over 33,000 Sikhs, a Soho Road institution built on selfless service, and a Vaisakhi that fills a city park.
