Coventry is a cathedral city and metropolitan borough in the West Midlands, England, on the River Sherbourne, 19 miles (31 km) east-south-east of Birmingham, with 345,324 residents in the 2021 census. Its Punjabi community is one of the oldest in Britain: Sikhs were 17,297 people, 5.0 per cent of the city, in 2021, Panjabi is one of the two most spoken main languages after English, and the city's first gurdwara, Guru Nanak Parkash, has stood on Harnall Lane West since 1965.

## Where is Coventry, and why do Punjabis live there?

Coventry is the second largest city in the West Midlands after Birmingham, separated from it by the Meriden Gap green belt, and 94 miles (151 km) north-west of London. Leofric, Earl of Mercia, and his wife Lady Godiva founded a Benedictine monastery here in 1043, and a charter of Edward III in 1345 formally recognised its city status. The city became the centre of the British bicycle industry in the 19th century, the first motor car was made here by the Daimler Company in 1897, and Coventry grew into a major centre of the British motor industry. On the night of 14 November 1940 the Coventry Blitz killed 568 people and left the medieval cathedral a shell: the new cathedral, built beside the ruins, was consecrated on 25 May 1962 and is the city's best known landmark.

Punjabis were part of Coventry long before the post-war factories called. Two Punjabi pioneers, V. P. Hansrani and Ujagar Singh, arrived in England from the village of Rurka Kalan in 1939, moved to Coventry for better work and helped set up the Indian Workers Association in the city soon after the Second World War began, a body that later inspired branches across Britain. After 1948 Coventry's large industrial base drew the wider Commonwealth migration, and Sikhs arrived in numbers in the late 1950s and early 1960s, mainly from the Punjab region of India, for work in the motor, engineering and foundry trades. The city is listed under [Punjabi places in the United Kingdom](https://jugti.com/kosh/places/united-kingdom/).

## What do the numbers say?

Coventry's population rose by 8.9 per cent between the censuses, from around 317,000 in 2011 to 345,324 in 2021, faster than the West Midlands and England as a whole. The Sikh count rose from 15,912 in 2011 to 17,297 in 2021, holding at 5.0 per cent of all residents, well above the West Midlands share of 2.9 per cent and the England share of 0.9 per cent. The Indian ethnic group numbered 32,096 people, 9.3 per cent of the city, the largest Asian subgroup within an Asian or Asian British total of 18.5 per cent, and just over 15,600 residents, 4.5 per cent of the city, were born in India, the second most common country of birth after England.

For the Punjabi language, Coventry City Council's summary of the 2021 census records that Panjabi, at 2.3 per cent, is one of the three most popular main languages in the city after English, alongside Polish at 2.3 per cent and ahead of Romanian at 2.1 per cent, as the share speaking English as a first language fell from 86.1 per cent in 2011 to 82.5 per cent in 2021\. No absolute Coventry Punjabi speaker count from the 2021 census appears in the sources opened for this entry, so none is invented here: the last published count is from the 2011 census, when 6,849 residents aged three and over, 2.26 per cent, gave Punjabi as their main language.

## Foleshill: the Punjabi heart of the city

The community's centre of gravity is the north of the city. Coventry City Council's profile of Foleshill and Longford, home to around 34,400 people, about one in ten Coventry residents, records that 70.2 per cent of the area is from an ethnic minority background, against 44.7 per cent citywide. Sikhs were 8.3 per cent of Foleshill and Longford in 2021, rising to 12.0 per cent in Little Heath and 11.0 per cent in Longford, and Asian Indians were 13.9 per cent of the area. India was the area's most common overseas country of birth, at 7.1 per cent of all residents, and the council notes that international migration has historically been the main driver of the area's population growth. The Foleshill Road corridor is where that story is visible on the street: gurdwaras, Punjabi shops and businesses serving the whole city.

## Gurdwaras and community life

The Gurdwara Guru Nanak Parkash, at 71 Harnall Lane West, calls itself the first and oldest gurdwara in Coventry. Its own history records that Sikhs arrived in Coventry in the late 1950s and early 1960s, mainly from the Punjab region of India, came together as a sangat, a congregation, and set up the gurdwara in 1965, with the ground-laying ceremony on 5 September 1965\. It still carries the classic work of a Punjabi institution in Britain: a Punjabi school, Khalsa college classes, and teaching in Gurbani santhia, the careful reading of scripture, and kirtan, devotional singing.

On Cross Road stands the Singh Sabha Gurdwara, and Foleshill Road carries the Ramgarhia Gurdwara, the Sikh temple of the Ramgarhia community, alongside the shops of the corridor it serves. Together the Coventry gurdwaras mark the same pattern seen across Punjabi Britain: a first temple within a few years of arrival, then a family of institutions as the community put down roots, raised children in the city and buried its elders there.

Coventry's Punjabi story is older and deeper than its size suggests: a community organised since 1939, worshipping in its own gurdwara since 1965, and holding at one resident in twenty in the 2021 census.
