Glasgow is Scotland's largest city, standing on both banks of the River Clyde in west-central Scotland, with 620,756 residents in Scotland's Census 2022\. It is the centre of Sikh and Punjabi life in Scotland: the census counted 3,456 Sikhs in the city, just under a third of all Sikhs in Scotland, served by four gurdwaras including Scotland's first purpose-built gurdwara, opened in Pollokshields in 2013, and the Central Gurdwara on Berkeley Street.

## Where is Glasgow, and why do Punjabis live there?

Glasgow grew from a settlement associated with St Kentigern, known as St Mungo, from around 550, on the lowest bridging point of the Clyde, 20 miles (32 km) from the river's mouth on the Atlantic coast. Its Gaelic name, Glaschu, means Green Glen. It became a royal burgh in 1450, its university was founded in 1451, and after the Clyde was deepened in the 18th century it boomed on transatlantic trade in tobacco, sugar and rum. The Industrial Revolution added coal, iron and chemicals, and above all shipbuilding, developed from the early 19th century, which made the Clyde world famous and drew workers from everywhere, including, in time, Punjab.

Punjabis reached Glasgow by several routes. Bhatra Sikhs were established in Glasgow and Edinburgh in the early to mid 1920s, and The Glasgow Story notes that the earliest Asian immigrants to the city tended to come mainly from Punjab. Early arrivals worked as pedlars selling cloth door to door, in the Govan shipyards, and as drivers and conductors for Glasgow Corporation Transport, before families built the shop and wholesale businesses, from corner shops to large cash-and-carry firms, that became the community's economic backbone. Scotland ran its own census a year after England and Wales, so Glasgow's figures in this entry come from Scotland's Census 2022, run by National Records of Scotland. The city is listed under [Punjabi places in the United Kingdom](https://jugti.com/kosh/places/united-kingdom/).

## What do the numbers say?

Glasgow City's population rose from 593,245 in 2011 to 620,756 in Scotland's Census 2022\. The census counted 3,456 Sikhs in the city, 0.56 per cent of residents, up from 3,149 in 2011 and 2,374 in 2001\. Across Scotland, 10,988 people gave Sikh as their religion in 2022, so just under a third of Scotland's Sikhs live in Glasgow. The wider Punjabi story runs through two ethnic groups, because Glasgow's Punjabis include families from both sides of the 1947 border: the Indian ethnic group numbered 13,990 people, 2.25 per cent of the city, and the Pakistani group, which includes many Punjabi speakers, numbered 30,912, 4.98 per cent, within an Asian, Asian Scottish or Asian British total of 68,793, 11.08 per cent. By birth, 10,212 residents were born in India and 12,508 in Pakistan.

For the Punjabi language this entry is precise about the limit of the opened figures: no Glasgow or Scotland Punjabi speaker count from the 2022 census appears in the sources opened for this entry, and none is invented here. What is verified is the ranking: the Glasgow Centre for Population Health records that after English and Scots, the most commonly used home languages in Scotland are Polish, Chinese languages, Urdu and then Punjabi, and Punjabi is also among the top languages used by patients of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. Community estimates of far larger Sikh numbers circulate in Glasgow reporting, but they conflict with the census count and are not used here.

## Pollokshields, Govanhill and the south side

The first settlement was in the Gorbals, just south of the Clyde, where Glasgow's first gurdwara opened in the early 1950s on the top floor of a tenement at 79 South Portland Street. As numbers grew in the 1960s and 1970s, the main areas of residence became Woodlands, Pollokshields and Govanhill. Pollokshields, with Albert Drive at its heart, is still the centre of Sikh Glasgow, and the city is Scotland's most ethnically diverse: 19.3 per cent of residents, almost one in five, are from a non-White minority ethnic group.

## Gurdwaras: from a tenement room to golden domes

Glasgow has four gurdwaras, of eight in Scotland. The Glasgow Gurdwara Guru Granth Sahib, on Albert Drive in Pollokshields, is Scotland's first purpose-built gurdwara: completed in 2013 at a cost of around 4 million pounds, with a golden dome modelled on Amritsar and an education centre teaching Punjabi reading, writing and speaking up to A-level. Its congregation had worshipped for around 51 years before that on nearby Nithsdale Road. The Central Gurdwara Singh Sabha, on Berkeley Street in the West End, is the city's second purpose-built gurdwara, completed in 2016 at around 8.5 million pounds after 16 years of fundraising, with Punjabi classes, kirtan, harmonium and tabla teaching, langar and an exhibition on the Glasgow Sikh community. The Guru Nanak Gurdwara on Otago Street celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2021\. Each spring the city's Vaisakhi Nagar Kirtan, running since April 1992, carries that community onto the streets.

Glasgow is where Punjabi Scotland is governed from, worships and marches: a small share of a big city, but the largest Sikh community in Scotland, with roots in the 1920s and a first gurdwara older than most in Britain. Its counterpart in this series south of the border is [Coventry](https://jugti.com/kosh/places/united-kingdom/coventry/).
