London is the capital and largest city of England and the United Kingdom, standing on the River Thames in the southeast of England, with 8,799,728 residents in the 2021 census across its 32 boroughs and the City of London. It holds the largest Punjabi community in Britain: the 2021 census counted 144,543 Sikhs in the London region, 1.6 per cent of the city, and its western suburb of Southall, called Little India, is described as home to one of the largest Punjabi communities outside the Indian subcontinent.

## Where is London, and why do Punjabis live there?

London stands on the Thames at the head of its tidal estuary, in southeast England. Its ancient core, the City of London, began as the Roman town of Londinium, and the neighbouring City of Westminster has housed the national government and parliament for centuries. Since 1965 the city has largely meant Greater London, 1,572 square kilometres governed by the Greater London Authority, the Mayor and the London Assembly, together with 33 local authorities: the 32 boroughs and the City of London.

Punjabis live here because London was where the work was. Post war Britain needed labour for its factories, its transport and the fast growing Heathrow Airport west of the city, and Punjabi workers, many of them Sikhs, came from the 1950s onward and settled near that work in the western boroughs. A second great wave, the East African Asians who arrived between 1968 and 1974, brought thousands more Punjabi families, and the communities they built, their gurdwaras, shops and businesses, drew family after family after them. London is listed under [Punjabi places in the United Kingdom](https://jugti.com/kosh/places/united-kingdom/).

## What do the numbers say?

The 2021 census counted 144,543 people in the London region whose religion was Sikh, 1.6 per cent of London's 8,799,728 residents, the largest Sikh population of any British city. The wider Indian ethnic group in London numbered 656,272 people, 7.5 per cent of the city, within an Asian or Asian British total of 1,817,640\. The census counted Hindus at 453,034 and Muslims at 1,318,754 in London, which puts the Sikh community in scale: smaller than those two, but concentrated in a handful of boroughs where it shapes whole neighbourhoods.

For the Punjabi language the census picture needs care. The Office for National Statistics bulletin opened for this entry publishes no London wide Punjabi total, and this entry does not invent one. What is verified is this: across England and Wales, 291,000 people aged three and over gave Panjabi as their main language in 2021, and 63.9 per cent of those Panjabi speakers identified as Sikh. In the London Borough of Ealing, which contains Southall, Panjabi was the most common main language after English, spoken as a main language by 17,286 people, 4.9 per cent of the borough, and Ealing ranked first in London for Punjabi speakers.

## Southall and the west London boroughs

Southall is a large suburban town in the Borough of Ealing, 10.7 miles west of Charing Cross, with 78,253 residents in the 2021 census. Its first group of South Asian settlers arrived in 1950, reportedly recruited to work in a local factory owned by a former British Indian Army officer, and the town's factories and its closeness to Heathrow drew many more. Parts of Southall became home to the largest Punjabi community outside the Indian subcontinent, and its commercial heart, the High Street and Southall Broadway on the Uxbridge Road, is a major centre of South Asian culture, which is why the town is called Little India.

The census shows how far the community spreads beyond Southall. The Office for National Statistics lists four Outer London boroughs, Ealing, Hillingdon, Hounslow and Redbridge, among the ten local authorities in England and Wales with the largest concentrations of people who identified as Sikh, and 18.5 per cent of everyone who identified as Sikh in England and Wales lived in those four boroughs. Ealing alone counted 28,491 Sikhs in 2021, 7.8 per cent of its 367,115 residents, the highest number of any London borough. To the east, Ilford in Redbridge and Barking carry the community across the city.

## Gurdwaras and community life

London holds the oldest gurdwara in Europe. The Khalsa Jatha British Isles was founded in 1908, the first gurdwara established in Europe, and after decades in Sinclair Road, West Kensington, it moved in 1969 to Queensdale Road in Shepherd's Bush, where the Central Gurdwara still stands. In Southall, the first Sikhs of the 1940s and 1950s worshipped in homes, then in halls, and in 1964 the town's two Sikh groups merged as Sri Guru Singh Sabha Southall and opened its first gurdwara at The Green.

That Sabha now runs the largest Sikh temple in London: the gurdwara on Guru Nanak Road, the old Havelock Road, opened on 30 March 2003, built for 17.5 million pounds raised from the local community, with a main hall seating up to 3,000\. Together with its second gurdwara on Park Avenue it receives over 15,000 worshippers and visitors a week, serves as many as 20,000 free langar meals a week, and set up Khalsa Primary School in Southall. Every spring its Vaisakhi Nagar Kirtan processes the two miles between the two gurdwaras, drawing tens of thousands onto the streets.

East London has its own anchor: Singh Sabha London East opened a new 13.5 million pound gurdwara in Barking in October 2021, serving a catchment its leaders put at over 25,000 Sikhs, with Punjabi classes alongside its halls and sports facilities. Beyond the temples, London's Punjabi voice is on the air: Panjab Radio, founded in 2000 by Surjit Singh Ghuman, became the first 24 hour national radio station catering specifically to Punjabi listeners in the United Kingdom, and broadcasts on 558 AM across London. And each year the Mayor of London's Vaisakhi on the Square fills Trafalgar Square with kirtan, langar and Gatka, the capital's official celebration of the birth of the Khalsa.

London is where Punjabi Britain began, with the first gurdwara in Europe in 1908 and a factory town in the west that became Little India, and it remains the community's British capital in numbers, institutions and voice. Southall, the town within the city that Punjabis made their own, gets its own entry next in this series.
