Dallas is the third largest city in Texas and the ninth largest in the United States, the seat of Dallas County in the northeast of the state, with 1,304,379 residents in the 2020 census and 7,637,387 people across the Dallas and Fort Worth metropolitan area, the Metroplex. Its Punjabi community is the professional heart of Punjabi North Texas: 4,273 Punjabi Americans counted in the Dallas and Fort Worth area in the American Community Survey of 2017 to 2021, gurdwaras in Garland, Richardson and Euless, and a Little India in Irving's Las Colinas.

## Where is Dallas, and why do Punjabis live there?

Dallas stands in northeastern Texas, the county seat of Dallas County, with parts of the city reaching into Collin, Denton, Kaufman and Rockwall counties. John Neely Bryan founded it in 1841, and it was incorporated as a city on 2 February 1856\. With neighbouring Fort Worth it anchors the Metroplex, the largest metropolitan area in Texas and the southern United States, whose combined statistical area held 8,121,108 people in 2020.

Punjabis live here because Dallas grew rich on exactly the work Punjabi professionals do. The city moved from cotton and rail to banking, commerce and a major technology industry on the strength of firms such as Texas Instruments, and after the immigration changes of 1965, engineers, doctors and technology workers settled across its northern suburbs, brought their families, and built gurdwaras and businesses that drew more Punjabis after them. Dallas is listed under [Punjabi places in the United States](https://jugti.com/kosh/places/united-states/).

## What do the numbers say?

The American Community Survey for 2017 to 2021 counted 4,273 Punjabi Americans in the Dallas, Fort Worth and Arlington combined statistical area, 0.06 per cent of its population, one of the fifteen largest Punjabi concentrations in the country in those tables, and 9,795 Punjabi Americans across Texas. These are language and ancestry based survey counts, the standard measure for Punjabi America.

The United States census does not ask about religion, so every Sikh figure here is an estimate and is labelled that way. In 2020 the census counted Sikh as an ethnicity for the first time: 1,918 Texas residents recorded Sikh alone, the basis of a derived estimate of about 10,777 Sikhs statewide. The county table does not list Dallas County, so no county figure for the city itself can be given. It does list Collin County, the suburban county holding Plano, Frisco and Allen, where 427 residents recorded Sikh alone and the derived estimate is about 2,451 Sikhs, a measure of how much of the community lives in the northern suburbs.

## Richardson, Garland and the northern suburbs

Punjabi Dallas is a suburban community spread across the northern half of the Metroplex. The suburbs most associated with the wider Indian American settlement it is part of are Richardson, Plano, Frisco, Allen, Carrollton and Irving, together with Garland and Fort Worth. The settlement figures tell the story at county level: in 2021 an estimated 100,027 Indian Americans lived in Collin County alone, 9.01 per cent of its population, with 69,499 more in Dallas County. Those figures cover Indian Americans as a whole, not Punjabis alone, but the gurdwaras, Punjabi shops and Punjabi speakers of the northern suburbs are woven through that settlement.

Irving's planned district of Las Colinas, with the adjoining Valley Ranch, is the community's best known address. Its wider South Asian commercial heart has been called a Little India: reporting counted more than 100 Indian and South Asian grocery stores, restaurants, jewellery and clothing shops and other businesses near the junction of MacArthur Boulevard and Interstate 635 and along Belt Line Road. Las Colinas and Valley Ranch belong to all of South Asia, not to Punjabis alone, but Punjabi families, shops and the Sikh temples of the northern suburbs are woven through them.

## Gurdwaras and community life

The community's oldest temple is the Sikh Temple of North Texas in Garland, which dates its establishment to 1976 and serves Sikhs from across the Dallas and Fort Worth Metroplex. Garland also holds Gurdwara Akaljot, on West Campbell Road at the Richardson and Plano edge of the city, with langar on Fridays and Sundays and children's classes in Gurbani, Punjabi and Sikh history. Across in Richardson stands the Gurdwara Singh Sabha of North Texas, and to the west the Gurdwara Sikh Sangat in Euless runs a Gurmat School alongside its daily divans. Between them, the temples map the community: an old Garland foundation, and suburban gurdwaras where the families now live.

The community's institutions reach beyond the gurdwara. The Guru Nanak Langar at Southern Methodist University, founded by student Sukhdeep Singh Bhatia in 2021 and grown to more than 300 students, serves free vegetarian meals to students of every background in the Sikh tradition of langar. The Crow Museum of Asian Art in downtown Dallas holds a Sikh art collection developed with the Sikh Heritage Foundation, among the few permanent collections of Sikh art in an American museum.

Today Dallas is the northern anchor of Punjabi Texas, a generation younger than the Californian heartlands and a working lifetime removed from its first home divans of 1982\. Its southern counterpart in this series is [Houston](https://jugti.com/kosh/places/united-states/houston/), where the first Sikhs arrived in 1971\.
