Indianapolis is the capital of Indiana and its largest city, the seat of Marion County in the centre of the state, with 887,642 residents in the 2020 census and 2,111,040 people in its metropolitan area. Its Punjabi and Sikh community is America's trucking story in one city: the American Community Survey of 2017 to 2021 counted 5,493 Punjabi Americans in the Indianapolis area, 0.24 per cent of its population, one of the highest shares of any large American metro, drawn by the interstates and warehouses of the Crossroads of America and centred on the city and its southern suburb of Greenwood.

## Where is Indianapolis, and why do Punjabis live there?

Indianapolis stands in central Indiana, at the meeting of the White River and Fall Creek, and it is both the state capital and the seat of Marion County, with which it forms a consolidated city and county government. Founded in 1821 as the planned new state capital, it became the seat of government in 1825 and was incorporated as a city in 1847\. Its nickname, the Crossroads of America, is geography turned into an economy: more interstates run through Indianapolis than any other American city, led by the crossing of I-65 and I-70 downtown.

Punjabis live here because of that crossroads. The first Sikhs arrived in the 1960s as engineers and professors, but the community's great growth came with logistics: trucking companies, freight work and vast warehouses, including the FedEx Express hub at the airport, the company's second largest in the world, and Amazon fulfilment centres in suburbs such as Greenwood. Owner operators and drivers settled where the freight was, first on the east side and then across the southern suburbs. Indianapolis is listed under [Punjabi places in the United States](https://jugti.com/kosh/places/united-states/).

## What do the numbers say?

The American Community Survey for 2017 to 2021 counted 5,493 Punjabi Americans in the Indianapolis, Carmel and Muncie combined statistical area, 0.24 per cent of its population, the eleventh largest Punjabi concentration in the country in those tables and, by share, one of the strongest outside California. Across Indiana the same survey counted 6,691 Punjabi Americans, 0.11 per cent of the state. The survey's own notes name Greenwood, in the Indianapolis metropolitan area, as one of the significant Punjabi concentrations outside California and New York. These are language and ancestry based survey counts, the standard measure for Punjabi America.

The United States census does not ask about religion, so every Sikh figure here is an estimate and is labelled that way. In 2020 the census counted Sikh as an ethnicity for the first time: 1,283 Indiana residents recorded Sikh alone, the basis of a derived estimate of about 6,812 Sikhs statewide. For the city itself, 264 residents of Indianapolis recorded Sikh alone, a derived estimate of about 1,532, while the southern suburb of Greenwood recorded 370 Sikh alone, a derived estimate of about 2,147, or 3.36 per cent of the town, one of the highest Sikh shares of any place in the tables. Community estimates run higher and are reported as estimates: the Encyclopedia of Indianapolis records about 5,000 Sikh families across Indiana by 2020, most of them in central Indiana.

## Trucking and the crossroads economy

Indianapolis calls itself the Crossroads of America because the freight of a continent passes through it, and that freight built Punjabi Indianapolis. Reporting and academic research on the community describe Sikh entrepreneurs founding trucking and transport companies, drivers settling near the interstate junctions, and warehouse work in the logistics parks that spread across the southwest side and the southern suburbs. Many in the community own trucking or other transport businesses, and the work explains the map: this is a diaspora of highways and warehouses rather than of one old neighbourhood.

The settlement followed the work south. The first families gathered on the southeast side of the city around the Sikh Satsang's temple, but growth since the 2000s has run through the southern suburbs, above all Greenwood in Johnson County, where a gurdwara opened in 2007 whose members are mostly truck drivers, many of whom came from California, and Fishers to the northeast, which has its own gurdwara. The Encyclopedia of Indianapolis counts at least seven gurdwaras in central Indiana, in Indianapolis, Greenwood, Fishers, Plainfield and other suburbs, serving a community it describes as one of the largest in the Midwest.

## Gurdwaras and community life

The anchor institution is the Sikh Satsang of Indianapolis, on the east side, whose community dates itself to 1969, when the city's small Sikh population first organised. Its campus runs the Khalsa School on Sundays, where children learn Punjabi, Gurmukhi and kirtan, alongside Punjabi classes, yoga and community programmes, and its gym hosts an annual basketball tournament that draws Sikh youth teams from across the region.

Two further gurdwaras mark the suburban map. In Greenwood, the Gurdwara Shri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji opened in 2007 with 400 to 500 members, most of them truck drivers, and anchors the fast growing southern sangat. To the northeast, the Gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar in Fishers serves that side of the metropolitan area as the Guru Nanak Sikh Society. Together with the Sikh Satsang, they show a community that has outgrown a single temple: at least seven gurdwaras now serve central Indiana.

Beyond the temples, the community shares in the wider South Asian life of the city: the India Association of Indianapolis, founded in 1968, runs the annual India Day and Diwali celebrations, and the Indy India Center, opened in February 2024 inside the historic Murat Temple downtown, gives that wider community a permanent cultural home. These are South Asian institutions rather than Punjabi ones, and Punjabi Indianapolis takes part in them as one community among several.

Indianapolis is the inland proof that Punjabi America no longer belongs only to the coasts and the great farming valleys. A community that began with a handful of engineers in the 1960s now fills gurdwaras from Fishers to Greenwood, and its nearest counterpart in this series is [Chicago](https://jugti.com/kosh/places/united-states/chicago/), the older Midwest centre three hours northwest.
