Yuba City is a farming city in Sutter County, California, on the Feather River north of Sacramento, and one of the oldest Punjabi centres in the United States. An estimated 10,000 Sikhs lived here in 2020, about 15 per cent of its 70,117 residents, earning it the nickname Mini Punjab.

## Where is Yuba City, and why do Punjabis live there?

Yuba City is the county seat of Sutter County in the Sacramento Valley, about 40 miles north of Sacramento. The Feather River borders the city to the east and separates it from Marysville, and the Sutter Buttes, often called the smallest mountain range in the world, rise to the northwest. The 2020 census counted 70,117 people in the city, and the wider Yuba City metropolitan area, covering Sutter and Yuba counties, counted 164,138.

Punjabis live here because of farming. The flat, irrigated orchard land of the Sacramento Valley suited farmers from Punjab, and Punjabi workers were settling in the Yuba and Sutter area from the early 1900s. Work in the orchards became ownership of orchards, families followed, and a gurdwara, shops and festivals grew around them. Yuba City is one of the cities listed under [Punjabi places in the United States](https://jugti.com/kosh/places/united-states/).

## What do the numbers say?

The United States census does not ask about religion, so every Sikh figure for Yuba City is an estimate, and this page treats it that way. A 2020 derived estimate, built from census counts of people who wrote in Sikh as their ethnicity, puts Yuba City at about 10,000 Sikhs, around 15 per cent of the city, with a detailed table giving 10,193, or 14.54 per cent. Sutter County as a whole was estimated at about 11,000 Sikhs, around 11 per cent of the county, described as the most proportionally Sikh county in America.

Language data from the American Community Survey tells the same story in a different way. In the wider Sutter and Yuba Counties area that contains Yuba City and Marysville, Punjabi was the primary language in 10,103 households in 2024, 5.91 per cent of households, second only to Spanish among non-English languages, ahead of Hmong. In the Central Valley as a whole, Punjabi is the third most spoken language after English and Spanish.

## Pioneer farmers in the Sacramento Valley

The first Sikh is recorded as arriving in Yuba City in 1906, and Punjabi farmers began settling in the area around 1910\. The early decades were hard. From 1913 the California Alien Land Laws barred them from owning land, so some used American front men to hold land or put it in the names of their American born children. Immigration law made it far easier for Punjabi men to enter than for women and children, so many men lived alone in bunkhouses, separated from families in Punjab.

A local pioneer chronology records Kartar Singh as the first person to buy land in Sutter County in 1913, and Puna Singh and his family as the first Asian Indian resident family in 1924\. After the Luce-Celler Act of 1946 and the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 eased restrictions, family immigration grew steadily, and the farm labour community became a settled farming community.

## Peaches, prunes and the Peach King

Agriculture is still the economy around Yuba City. The Yuba and Sutter region grows more than 300 commodities, and its signature crops are rice, cling peaches, prunes, walnuts and almonds. Punjabi families are central to that orchard economy, and local accounts credit Punjabi farmers in the Yuba and Sutter area with growing most of the peach crop and large shares of the prune, almond and walnut crops.

The best known Punjabi farmer is Didar Singh Bains. Born in Nangal Khurd village in Hoshiarpur district, Punjab, he arrived in the United States in 1958 with eight dollars, worked as a farm labourer, and bought his first land in 1962\. By 1978 he had become the largest peach farmer in California, widely known as the Peach King. His farming later spread to prunes, walnuts, almonds and grapes, and he became one of the 26 founding members of the Yuba City gurdwara and a founder of its annual parade.

## The gurdwara on Tierra Buena Road

Before 1970, Sikhs in Yuba City had to travel about 90 to 100 miles to the gurdwara in Stockton, the oldest in the United States. In 1969, on the 500th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, a groundbreaking was held for a gurdwara of their own. Twenty six founding members formed the temple committee, and brothers Bakhtawar and Udham Singh Purewal donated three acres of almond orchard land on Tierra Buena Road.

The Sikh Temple Gurdwara on Tierra Buena Road opened in 1970\. At over 18,000 square feet, with a large prayer hall and a langar hall, it was the first gurdwara in the United States built in a traditional Indo-Persian architectural style, and it is described as serving over 20,000 Sikhs in the area. Its opening is credited with a renaissance of Sikh community life in Yuba City. Other gurdwaras followed in the area, including temples on Bogue Road and in South Yuba City.

## The Nagar Kirtan, a parade that fills the city

Each year, on the first Sunday of November, Yuba City holds its Sikh Parade, a Nagar Kirtan marking the Guru Gadee, the inauguration of Guru Granth Sahib as the eternal Guru. A local pioneer chronology dates the first Nagar Kirtan to 1979, while the UC Davis Punjabi and Sikh Diaspora archive dates the parade founding to 1980, the year Didar Singh Bains established it after seeing a similar event in Canada. Either way, it has run for more than four decades.

The three day festival ends with a procession of floats through the city, free food served along the route in the spirit of seva, and crowds far larger than the city itself. Recent editions have drawn over 100,000 visitors, and the 45th Nagar Kirtan in 2024 brought in over 100,000 people. It is widely described as one of the largest Sikh festivals outside India.

## Yuba City's Punjabi community today

Today Yuba City's Punjabis are farmers, business owners and professionals, visible in the orchards, in Punjabi shops and media, and in civic life. Kash Gill became mayor of Yuba City in 2009, one of the first Sikh mayors in the United States, and Preet Didbal, elected in 2017, was the first Sikh woman to serve as a city mayor in United States history. The Punjabi American Heritage Society, established in Yuba City in 1993, keeps the pioneer story public, including a permanent exhibition on pioneer Punjabis.
