The Central Gurdwara (Khalsa Jatha British Isles) stands at 62 Queensdale Road, Shepherd's Bush, in west London, and it is the oldest gurdwara in the United Kingdom and the first gurdwara established in Europe, an entry in our guide to [Gurdwaras in the UK](https://jugti.com/kosh/religion/gurdwaras/gurdwaras-in-uk/). Founded in 1908, when Britain's Sikh community was tiny, it worshipped in Putney and then in Sinclair Road before moving to Queensdale Road in 1969, where its white building with golden domes serves London today.

## What does Khalsa Jatha mean?

Historic England explains the name: Khalsa refers to the body of initiated Sikhs established by Guru Gobind Singh Ji in 1699, and jatha is the Punjabi word for an organised group of people. A gurdwara itself means the Guru's door, the home of the Guru, who since the eighteenth century has been the Guru Granth Sahib Ji, the Sikh scripture honoured as the eternal Guru. The Khalsa Jatha British Isles was formed to promote religious and social activities among the Sikhs settled in the UK, and later in 1908 it affiliated to the Chief Khalsa Diwan of Amritsar.

## History: Putney and Sinclair Road

In 1911 the Jatha took a house in Putney, south London, for two years, and its opening ceremony was performed by Maharaja Bhupindra Singh of Patiala. In 1913 it bought the lease of 79 Sinclair Road, in West Kensington, and that house served as London's gurdwara for more than five decades, through two world wars, for a community that stayed small: the Jatha's own history notes that weekly diwans only began in 1953, and a full time granthi, the reader of the scripture, was employed in 1954.

The Sinclair Road years hold a remarkable place in British Sikh memory. A group photograph from 1937 shows the sangat gathered at the Shepherd's Bush gurdwara for the birthday of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, with Udham Singh, later the avenger of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, among those present. It is a reminder that this small house temple stood at the centre of British Sikh life long before the great post war migration.

## Norland Castle: the Queensdale Road home

As funds were raised, the Jatha bought the Queensdale Road building known as Norland Castle, in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, and after extensive rebuilding moved in during 1969\. Inside, the building is arranged in the classic order: the langar hall and kitchen at basement level, the main divan hall on the ground floor, and a gallery on the first floor. The golden domes that now mark it from the street were added in the early 1990s, along with a new palki sahib, the canopied throne of the Guru Granth Sahib Ji; a refurbishment programme from 2000 extended the gallery to give a second, smaller hall, and the gurdwara's own history records a further refurbishment in 2020.

## Keeping the old Khalsa traditions

Age has not made this gurdwara a museum. It keeps practices many newer temples have set aside: its Nishan Sahib, the Sikh flag, flies the original symbol of the Khalsa rather than the modern Khanda, and the gurdwara keeps close relations with the Nihang Dal, the oldest order of the Khalsa. When Amrit Sanchars, the Khalsa initiation ceremonies, are held here, they are conducted by the Budha Dal, the mainstream Nihang faction, as Wikipedia records.

## Seva in west London today

The langar here reaches well beyond the congregation. A 2021 account in the Norland Noticeboard, the local journal for the Norland area, recorded that up to 450 hot meals were cooked in this gurdwara every day and distributed to food banks and homeless shelters, given to anyone who needed them, and even to anyone who did not. The same account tells how, during the Covid-19 crisis in India, the gurdwara's volunteers arranged shipments of medical oxygen concentrators to hospitals in Punjab, for any patient who needed one. 'We see God in all of humanity, so we do not discriminate,' its sevadar explained.

## How do you visit the Central Gurdwara?

You visit at 62 Queensdale Road, London W11 4SG, in the Holland Park and Shepherd's Bush area of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. Everyone is welcome. Cover your head, remove your shoes, and sit quietly in the divan hall; stay for langar if you wish. A visit here is also a visit to the beginning of Sikh Britain: no other gurdwara in Europe has been serving its sangat for longer.
