Gurdwara Tap Asthan Mai Bhago, also called Gurdwara Mai Bhagoji, stands at Janwada village in Bidar district, Karnataka, about 11 kilometres from Bidar. It marks the house where Mai Bhago Ji, the warrior who rallied the Forty Liberated Ones before the Battle of Muktsar, spent her final years in meditation after the passing of [Guru Gobind Singh Ji](https://jugti.com/kosh/religion/sikhism/guru-gobind-singh-ji/) in 1708\. Her small house, kept as a holy place ever since, is today a quiet shrine managed with Bidar's great spring shrine, [Guru Nanak Jhira Sahib](https://jugti.com/kosh/religion/gurdwaras/guru-nanak-jhira-sahib-bidar/).

## What is Gurdwara Tap Asthan Mai Bhago?

Tap Asthan means the place of meditation, and that is exactly what this shrine records. After a life that had taken her from her home village to the battlefield of Muktsar and into the Guru's own guard, Mai Bhago Ji ended her days in this Deccan village, living in a house just outside the walls of a local fortress and teaching the Guru's way to those who came to her. The house survived her, was cared for by local custodians for more than two centuries, and became a gurdwara in 1948\. It remains deliberately simple: the sources describe a small room with a verandah in front, a hermitage rather than a monument.

## Who was Mai Bhago Ji?

Mai Bhago Ji, also honoured as Mata Bhag Kaur Ji, was born at Jhabal Kalan in present day Tarn Taran district, Punjab, into a devout Sikh family. Her father, Malo Shah, had served in Guru Hargobind Ji's army, and she learned the use of arms as she grew up. She married Bhai Nidhan Singh of Patti. Nothing in that village upbringing suggested what was coming: within a few years she would be the most remembered woman warrior of the Guru's age, and the only one of her party to survive the fight that made her name.

## From Muktsar to the Deccan

During the long siege of Anandpur Sahib, forty Sikhs from her home country, worn down by hunger, signed a written disclaimer and left the Guru. Mai Bhago Ji shamed them openly for it, rallied them, and rode out at their head to find him. At Khidrana, near the pool that was the only water for miles, they threw themselves at the pursuing imperial force and held it off long enough for the Guru to get clear. All forty died and were blessed as the Chali Mukte, the Forty Liberated Ones, and the place took the name Muktsar. Mai Bhago Ji, badly wounded, was found alive on the field. The story of that day is told in full on Jugti's page for [Gurdwara Tuti Gandi Sahib](https://jugti.com/kosh/religion/gurdwaras/gurdwara-tuti-gandi-sahib-muktsar/), the principal shrine of Muktsar.

The Guru had her wounds treated and kept her with him. She stayed at Talwandi Sabo, took to a warrior's dress, and travelled south with him as one of his personal bodyguards, armed, the accounts say, with a large lance and a musket. At Nanded she was given a residence inside the court, remembered today as Bunga Mai Bhago within the [Hazur Sahib](https://jugti.com/kosh/religion/gurdwaras/hazur-sahib-nanded/) complex, where her weapons are also kept. When Guru Gobind Singh Ji passed away at Nanded in 1708, she did not turn back to Punjab. She moved further south, into the Bidar country, and settled at Janwada.

## Her years at Janwada

At Janwada, called Jinvara in local speech, Mai Bhago Ji lived in a house just outside the fortress walls of Bala Rao and Rustam Rao, two Maratha chiefs. The connection was an old debt of honour: Guru Gobind Singh Ji had earlier helped to win the brothers' release from captivity, and their household now sheltered his bodyguard. A second account of her stay adds that she lived at the brothers' residence and carried the Guru's message to the people of the area. Either way, the pattern of her last years is consistent across the sources: meditation, teaching Gurmat, and a long life ended in this village far from home. She is remembered visiting the spring shrine at Bidar often, which ties her Deccan years to Guru Nanak Dev Ji's Bidar as well as to the tenth Guru's.

## The shrine today

After her death the house was maintained as a holy place by local caretakers, the last of them named in the accounts as Gulab Rao. In 1948, the year the Sikhs took charge of Nanak Jhira Sahib at Bidar, they also acquired Mai Bhago Ji's house from him and set it up formally as Gurdwara Tap Asthan Mai Bhago. It is maintained by the managing committee of Gurdwara Nanak Jhira Sahib, Bidar, and most pilgrims visit the two shrines together: the spring where the first Guru is remembered, and the quiet room where the tenth Guru's bodyguard prayed out her last years. Janwada itself is a large village and gram panchayat in Bidar taluka, with a population of 6,031 recorded in the 2011 census.

## How to reach Gurdwara Mai Bhagoji?

Janwada lies about 11 kilometres north east of Bidar, along the Bidar to Barauli and Aurad road. Bidar, with its railway station and airport a few kilometres from the town centre, is the natural base, and Nanak Jhira Sahib stands in the town itself, so the two visits pair easily in one morning. Cover your head and remove footwear before entering, as at any gurdwara. This shrine also appears in Jugti's guide to [Gurdwaras in India](https://jugti.com/kosh/religion/gurdwaras/gurdwaras-in-india/).
