It is described in its own profile as one of the most prominent, largest and most influential gurdwaras in the United States, with over 10,000 registered members, and it is open every day of the year. ## What is Gurdwara Sahib of Fremont? It is the Bay Area's gurdwara in the fullest sense. Although it stands in Fremont, a city in southern Alameda County at the edge of Silicon Valley, its congregation is drawn from seven counties: Alameda, Santa Clara, San Mateo, San Francisco, Contra Costa, Marin and Solano. Its Supreme Council extends registered membership to everyone who lives in the Bay Area, and to Sikh communities further inland in San Joaquin and Stanislaus Counties in the Central Valley. A gurdwara is the Sikh place of worship, centred on the Guru Granth Sahib and open to all; Fremont's temple runs that open house at regional scale, taking in an income of over a million dollars a year and welcoming, by its own 2014 count, more than 20,000 visitors a month for daily prayers. ## History: a temple for a changing city Fremont itself explains why this gurdwara grew so large. In 1970 the city was nearly all white; today it has no ethnic majority, almost half its population is foreign born, and nearly two thirds of its households speak a language other than English at home. Punjabi Sikhs were part of that transformation, settling in Fremont and the neighbouring East Bay and South Bay cities in growing numbers from the 1970s. The gurdwara dates its establishment to 1978\. As the community grew around it, the temple on Gurdwara Road became one of the biggest gurdwaras in the Bay Area, a fixed point for families spread across the whole region. The temple has also put its roof to work. In 2014 it commissioned an 82 kilowatt rooftop solar system, described at the time as one of the largest rooftop installations of its kind, expected to generate about 150,000 kilowatt hours of clean electricity a year. The temple's facility overseer, Harjeet Singh, said the aim was to cut the gurdwara's yearly utility bills and its carbon emissions, which the new system was expected to halve. It is a practical footnote, but a telling one: a congregation of this size runs its house like the institution it is. ## The prayer hall, the classes and the langar The main prayer hall is a cavernous room, where a marble centre aisle leads to the Guru Granth Sahib. On a Sunday, a public radio report counted around 3,000 people coming to worship, eat and find fellowship, with children playing outside, families queuing for the free vegetarian food, and cars streaming through the parking lot. Through the week the temple offers after school classes for children, SAT classes for high school students, and a Gurmat camp in the summer, alongside the daily prayers. And every day of the year, all 365 of them, the langar hall serves a free community meal to everyone who visits, regardless of age, sex, caste or creed. ## A bridge for Fremont's seniors The gurdwara's role in the city runs beyond worship. Fremont's Community Ambassadors Program for Seniors, known as CAPS, sends trained volunteers into the faith and cultural communities where seniors already gather, and its ambassadors at Gurdwara Sahib Fremont field questions in Punjabi at a folding table in front of the main building, helping recent immigrants work out what health care, food assistance and other benefits they can claim. As one ambassador, Kashmir Singh, explained it, seniors who cannot reach offices because they have no ride, or because of language, can come to the gurdwara and talk to their own community members with confidence. The temple is, in effect, one of the city's front doors. ## Keeping the memory of 1984 For many in this congregation, the road to Fremont ran through the violence that struck Sikhs in India in 1984, and the gurdwara keeps that memory deliberately. Reporting by the Fremont Argus in June 2006, later reprinted in the Congressional Record, described photographs of 73 Sikhs killed in 1984 ringing the gurdwara's dining room. That month the temple installed an exhibit about the faith that also commemorated the 400th anniversary of the martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev Ji. We do not want our future generations to forget, a gurdwara leader, Ram Singh, told the paper. The exhibit is part of why this temple matters to its members as more than a place of Sunday worship. ## Vaisakhi at Fremont The year's high point is [Vaisakhi](https://jugti.com/kosh/religion/festivals/vaisakhi/), the April festival marking the founding of the Khalsa in 1699\. At Fremont the day runs on daylong prayers, tents at the entrance laden with Punjabi food, sweet and savoury, and performances by bhangra dance and gatka martial arts groups from across the Bay, dressed in the royal blue and orange of the Khalsa, alongside booths selling artisanal goods. Volunteers, the sevadars, serve langar through the day. Community members describe the festival the same way the gurdwara describes itself: a day for sharing Sikh culture with everyone, in a welcoming environment open to the whole city. ## How do you visit Gurdwara Sahib of Fremont?
