Sikh Gurdwara Sahib San Jose is a Sikh temple in the Evergreen district of San Jose, California, and the largest gurdwara in North America. Founded in 1984 by leaders of the fast growing South Bay Sikh community, it stands on forty acres in the Evergreen Hills at 3636 Gurdwara Avenue, overlooking Silicon Valley. Its present complex of about 90,000 square feet was completed in April 2011.

## What is the Sikh Gurdwara Sahib of San Jose?

It is the largest gurdwara in North America, and it is also described as the largest Sikh centre of worship outside India. A gurdwara is the Sikh place of worship, centred on the Guru Granth Sahib and open to everyone. San Jose carries that open door at an unusual scale: a main Diwan Hall that draws some 10,000 people on a Sunday, a langar hall serving free meals, a school wing, and a free health clinic, all on one hilltop campus above the South Bay.

## History: from a rented hall to the Evergreen Hills

The gurdwara was founded in 1984\. The late Jit Singh Bainiwal, Teja Singh and the late Pyara Singh Obhi, together with other dedicated sevadars of the community, started it because the South Bay Sikh community was growing rapidly and families had no local gurdwara of their own. At first the congregation held its gatherings, called smagams, in a rented community centre. In 1986, after enormous obstacles in the gurdwara's own words, the committee bought a small building on White Road in east San Jose. Within a few months the building was already too small for the sangat, the congregation.

In 1990 the committee bought land at 2785 Quimby Road and added two neighbouring parcels over the next few years, reaching about five acres. By 1993 and 1994 the committee, led by Jit Singh Bainiwal and Bhuphindar Singh Dhillon, judged that even this site could not serve the future growth of the congregation, the size of hall and parking it would need, or the city and county requirements. Dhillon searched property after property and found the present home: forty acres in the Evergreen Hills with views over the bay by day and the city lights at night.

Building came in two phases. The first phase, with the site's whole infrastructure, was completed in 2004 at a cost of 12 million dollars and gave the gurdwara almost 20,000 square feet. The second phase, costing 20 million dollars, was completed in April 2011 and brought the complex to about 90,000 square feet. On opening day some 20,000 people were thought to have come, still the largest audience the gurdwara has recorded.

## Architecture: domes above Silicon Valley

The chief architect and designer of the project was the late Malkiat Singh Sidhu. The complex is built in a Sikh architectural style, with white and gold domes rising over long arched colonnades, and its best known room is the main Diwan Hall, the prayer hall where the Guru Granth Sahib is enthroned and kirtan, the singing of the hymns, is performed. A cascade fountain runs on the grounds. The setting does half the work of the design: from the Evergreen Hills the campus looks out across San Jose and Silicon Valley, and the city tourism office calls out the view, across the whole South Bay by day and to the twinkling city lights at night, as part of the visit itself.

## The working week: school, clinic and langar

A building this size is not only for Sundays, though Sundays are its peak: the main Diwan Hall sees about 10,000 people in attendance every Sunday. The school wing hosts about 700 students every Sunday for Punjabi language, kirtan and gurbani classes, teaching the children of the diaspora the script and the music of their own tradition. The grounds include basketball courts and a free health clinic. And through the week the kitchen and its hall provide langar, the free vegetarian meal served to everyone who comes, the practice Guru Nanak Dev Ji began as a statement that all people eat as equals.

## Why does the San Jose Gurdwara matter?

Because it marks how completely the Sikh community became part of California. The pioneers who founded the first American gurdwara at Stockton in 1912 were farm workers in the San Joaquin Valley. A century later their successors in the South Bay built the continent's largest gurdwara on a hill above the headquarters of the technology industry, in a city whose own tourism office lists the temple among its visitor sights and describes it as the largest Sikh centre of worship outside India's Golden Temple. The distance between those two facts is the story of Sikhs in America, and this gurdwara is its biggest single landmark.

## How do you visit the San Jose Gurdwara?

The gurdwara stands at 3636 Gurdwara Avenue, San Jose, CA 95148, in the Evergreen district in the east of the city, and it is open to the public. You do not need to be Sikh. Complimentary head coverings are provided at the entrance, with a place to wash your hands, before you enter the main worship hall, and every guest is welcome to share the langar meal and to take in the viewpoint over the South Bay. The gurdwara is listed in this Kosh under our guide to [Gurdwaras in the USA](https://jugti.com/kosh/religion/gurdwaras/gurdwaras-in-usa/), alongside [Gurdwara Sahib Stockton](https://jugti.com/kosh/religion/gurdwaras/gurdwara-sahib-stockton-ca/), the first gurdwara in the country, about an hour and a half to the north east.
