Gurdwara Singh Sabha of Washington, shortened to GSSW on its own site, is the principal gurdwara of the Seattle region. A gurdwara is the Sikh place of worship: its Darbar Hall centres on the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh scripture honoured as the eternal Guru, set on the Palki Sahib, and its langar hall serves a free vegetarian meal to everyone who comes. Pacific Lutheran University, reporting a student visit in January 2016, called it one of the largest gurdwaras in Washington state, serving the more than 20,000 Sikhs who live in the area. ## History: a Renton congregation since 1993 The gurdwara was established at Renton in 1993, beginning, by its own account, in a small wood frame structure. As the Seattle area's Sikh community grew, the building was expanded in 1997: the gurdwara's own description says it grew that year into a building of 23,000 square feet, serving about 25,000 Sikhs in the area at that time. During the 1997 expansion and inauguration the Nishan Sahib, the saffron Sikh flag, was hoisted on its present pole, and the base of that pole carries a memorial plaque commemorating Sikhs killed from 1984 onwards, which remains in place today. The congregation's own history page sets this local story inside a longer Pacific Northwest one: Sikhs first reached the region in the late 1800s and early 1900s to work in lumber mills, on railroads and on farms, entering through ports including Seattle, and faced violence at Bellingham in 1907 and Everett in 1907 before numbers fell, then grew again after the Immigration Act of 1965 and again after 1984\. The Renton gurdwara, founded by that later generation, has been shaped since its formation by youth education, selfless service, devotional worship and congregational organisation, in its own words. ## Art and the prayer hall The Renton gurdwara is known among its visitors for the Sikh art inside it. Its own art guide points to a calligraphy mural of Japji Sahib, the morning prayer of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, in the Darbar Hall, the Palki Sahib that houses the Guru Granth Sahib, a gallery of Sikh personalities and portraits of Sikh martyrs, statues of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur and Baba Hari Singh Nalwa, and paintings of Sri Darbar Sahib and Sri Akal Takht Sahib by the Canada based painter Jarnail Singh. Few American gurdwaras present their faith's history to visitors so deliberately, and school and university groups are among its regular guests. ## Worship, langar and community work Worship runs through the whole day here. The morning programme begins with the Prakash of the Guru Granth Sahib at 5:00, followed by Nitnem, Asa Ki Vaar kirtan and katha, and Ardaas and Hukamnama by 8:00\. Evenings bring Rehraas Sahib, kirtan and katha on Sikh history, and Simran sessions are held on Tuesday and Friday evenings. Langar, the free community kitchen meal, is served after worship and is open to people of all backgrounds, eaten sitting together on the floor as a sign of equality; the Pacific Lutheran students who visited in 2016 joined the meal and heard community members explain seva, selfless service, as donating ingredients, cooking and serving. The gurdwara's humanitarian fund, listed on Benevity, supports people in need without discrimination, including medical care, education tuition help and disaster relief, and the congregation has hosted observances such as a Bandi Chhor Divas talk recorded by SikhNet in November 2013. ## How to reach and visit The gurdwara stands at 5200 Talbot Road South, Renton, WA 98055, in south Renton, south east of downtown Seattle. Renton is about 12 miles by road from downtown Seattle, and most visitors drive; at city level, King County Metro's Line 101 bus and the Sounder train from Tukwila also connect Renton with central Seattle. Visitors of any background are welcome: remove your shoes, wash your hands, cover your head before entering the prayer hall, and stay for langar.
