In short

Gurdwara Siri Guru Singh Sabha is a historic Sikh shrine on Archer Road in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan, Pakistan, whose premises long housed St Gabriel's School. In August 2026 Sikh community leaders reported that the building had been demolished to make way for a shopping plaza, a claim that set off protests, a court case and an official inquiry. The building's age, its ownership and even its status as a gurdwara remain disputed, and this page records only what the reporting establishes.

Gurdwara Siri Guru Singh Sabha is a historic Sikh shrine on Archer Road in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province in Pakistan, and for most of its life its rooms served a second purpose: they housed St Gabriel's School, a Christian school that taught generations of Quetta children. In the summer of 2026 the building became the centre of a bitter dispute, when Sikh community leaders reported that it had been demolished to clear the site for a shopping plaza. What exactly stood on Archer Road, how old it was, and who had the right to sell it are all contested, and this page sets out only what the published reporting supports, claim by claim. It belongs to our hub for [Gurdwaras in Pakistan](https://jugti.com/kosh/religion/gurdwaras/gurdwaras-in-pakistan/).

## History of the Quetta gurdwara

Quetta's Sikhs were once a settled community of the Balochistan frontier, and community leaders say the province once held about twelve gurdwaras, of which only two remain today. When this shrine was founded is itself disputed. Many reports of the 2026 demolition describe a building nearly 200 years old. Jasbir Singh, chairman of the Balochistan Sikh Council, has said the Archer Road gurdwara was established in the 1930s. Both claims are carried here as claims: no published building record settling the date has been produced in the reporting. After the Partition of 1947, when most of Quetta's Hindus and Sikhs left for India, the premises passed to school use, and St Gabriel's School, a Christian institution, operated in the building for decades, which linked the site to two of Pakistan's minority communities at once.

## The Archer Road building and the school years

What the building looked like is barely documented in print, and this page will not invent a description. The official record is also ambiguous. Pakistan's Evacuee Trust Property Board, the body that administers Hindu and Sikh religious properties left behind at Partition, lists a functional Gurdwara Singh Sabha in Quetta, and separately records a non functional gurdwara near Archer Road. Reporting by the India Press Agency in September 2026 noted that the board's public records do not conclusively establish whether the demolished Archer Road building was either of those listed properties. For the families who sent children to St Gabriel's, the building needed no paperwork: it was simply the school on Archer Road, and its classrooms are the form in which most living Quetta residents knew the site.

## Was the Quetta gurdwara demolished?

On the community's account, yes. Jasbir Singh has said demolition of the building began in June 2026, the school was moved out, and the Sikh community was not informed beforehand. By late August 2026 the reported demolition was public news. Punjab Newsline reported on 28 August 2026 that a shopping plaza was under construction on the site, that the Balochistan High Court had for the time being declined to halt the work, and that community leaders alleged the Evacuee Trust Property Board had sold the property to a private developer. The same report noted that neither the Pakistan government nor the board had issued an official response to the allegations. Sikh leaders have also alleged that sacred objects at the site, including a throne and a palanquin, were destroyed, a claim the India Press Agency reported had not been independently established.

## A disputed demolition: the inquiry and the arguments

The dispute has not been one sided. Ramesh Singh Arora, president of the Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, has offered a different account, saying the information available to him indicated that the property belonged to a Sikh individual rather than to a gurdwara. National Assembly member Ramesh Kumar has said an investigation identified the involvement of former Evacuee Trust Property Board officials, members of the local Sikh community and what he called a commercial mafia, and has promised that damage to minority places of worship will not be tolerated. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee in Amritsar has urged Pakistan's authorities to stop the construction and return the property to the Sikh community, and former Indian member of parliament Tarlochan Singh has petitioned the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi to halt the plaza and reconstruct the gurdwara. Protests in Quetta have drawn Sikh, Christian and Hindu representatives together. Until the inquiry and the court case conclude, the honest summary is this: on the community's account a historic minority building on Archer Road has been demolished, and its ownership, its age and the authority for its fall all remain officially unresolved.

## Why does this shrine matter beyond Quetta?

Because it tests how Pakistan keeps the heritage of the minorities who left in 1947 and of the small communities who stayed. Balochistan's Sikh population is small, and each lost building is a large share of its visible history: the same site held a Sikh shrine and a Christian school, so its fall touches two communities and the city's own memory of a more mixed past. Campaigners in Quetta, including Balochistan Senator Danesh Kumar, have used the case to press for stronger protection of minority religious property across the province, and for a judicial inquiry into who authorised the demolition and whether any transfer of the land followed the law. Whatever the inquiry finds, the Archer Road case will be cited whenever the protection of gurdwaras in Pakistan is debated.

## Can you visit Sikh shrines in Quetta today?

Not this one: the Archer Road site is a disputed construction site, not a functioning shrine open to visitors, and no one should travel expecting to enter it. The Evacuee Trust Property Board's lists do record a functional Gurdwara Singh Sabha in Quetta, held in its records as separate from the non functional Archer Road property, and Quetta's small resident Sikh community keeps its worship in the city. Foreign visitors to Balochistan in any case need Pakistani visas and should check current security advice before travelling. Pilgrims are better served for now by the staffed shrines of [Nankana Sahib](https://jugti.com/kosh/religion/gurdwaras/nankana-sahib/) and the gurdwaras covered in our [Lahore guide](https://jugti.com/kosh/religion/gurdwaras/gurdwaras-in-lahore/), while the Archer Road dispute runs its course.
