Lahore was a Guru city before it was an imperial one. Guru Ram Das Ji was born here in Chuna Mandi in 1534, and Guru Arjan Dev Ji, his son, was martyred here in 1606 after torture ordered by the emperor Jahangir. In the eighteenth century the city saw repeated martyrdoms under its Mughal and Afghan governors, among them Bhai Mani Singh Ji and Bhai Taru Singh Ji. When Maharaja Ranjit Singh made Lahore the capital of his Sikh Empire, the shrines were rebuilt in marble and gold: Dera Sahib gained its gilded dome and the Maharaja's own Samadhi rose beside it. Partition emptied the city's Sikh neighbourhoods in 1947, and many smaller gurdwaras were lost or reused, but the great shrines survived under the Evacuee Trust Property Board and its Sikh committee, whose headquarters is at Dera Sahib today. ## The Fort ensemble: Dera Sahib [Dera Sahib](https://jugti.com/kosh/religion/gurdwaras/dera-sahib-lahore/) stands just outside the walled city in an ensemble with the Lahore Fort, the Badshahi Mosque, the Hazuri Bagh and the Samadhi of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. It commemorates the spot where Guru Arjan Dev Ji disappeared into the Ravi in 1606 after five days of torture; Guru Hargobind Ji raised a memorial here in 1619, and the present building with its gilded dome rose under Maharaja Ranjit Singh. The gurdwara is the working headquarters of the Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee, and every pilgrim jatha to Pakistan begins or ends here. Entry is normally for Sikh pilgrims, and other visitors need permission from the Evacuee Trust Property Board. ## The old city shrines Inside the old city, [Janam Asthan Guru Ram Das](https://jugti.com/kosh/religion/gurdwaras/gurdwara-janam-asthan-guru-ram-das-lahore/) in Chuna Mandi marks the 1534 birthplace of the fourth Guru, in the bazaar quarter where his family lived; the shrine was rebuilt by Maharaja Ranjit Singh, and the Singh Sabha movement was born in its orbit. A short walk away, [Shahid Ganj Singh Singhania](https://jugti.com/kosh/religion/gurdwaras/gurdwara-shahid-ganj-singh-singhania-lahore/) near Landa Bazaar is a martyrdom ground of the persecution years, where Bhai Mani Singh Ji was executed in 1738\. The [Shaheed Bhai Taru Singh](https://jugti.com/kosh/religion/gurdwaras/gurdwara-shaheed-bhai-taru-singh-lahore/) shrine at Naulakha remembers the Sikh who chose to have his scalp removed rather than his hair cut: it has been closed to the public since December 2022, and this guide lists it so the record is complete, not as a place you can enter today. ## At the city's edge Two Lahore entries stand outside the centre. At Dera Chahal, a village in Guru Nanak Dev Ji's maternal family country, [Janamasthan Bebe Nanaki](https://jugti.com/kosh/religion/gurdwaras/gurdwara-janamasthan-bebe-nanaki-dera-chahal/) marks the birthplace of his elder sister, restored in 2012\.
