Gurdwaras in the UK are the Sikh temples of a community of 535,517 people counted in the 2021 census, 0.8 percent of the British population and the country's fourth largest religious group. They range from the Khalsa Jatha in London, founded in 1908 and the first gurdwara in Europe, to [Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha Southall](https://jugti.com/kosh/religion/gurdwaras/gurdwara-sri-guru-singh-sabha-southall-uk/), the largest Sikh temple in London.

## What are the gurdwaras of the UK?

A gurdwara is the Sikh place of worship, literally the doorway to the Guru. Its prayer hall centres on the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh scripture honoured as the eternal Guru, and every gurdwara runs a langar, a free vegetarian kitchen open to everyone regardless of faith, status or background. In Britain the gurdwara is also the community's anchor: school, advice centre, sports club, wedding hall and meeting place, usually built and run entirely by the local sangat, the congregation, through donations and voluntary seva, selfless service.

## How did Sikhs first come to Britain?

The first Sikh to settle permanently in Britain was Maharaja Duleep Singh, the last ruler of the Sikh empire, who arrived in England in 1854 after being exiled from his kingdom by the East India Company; his mother, Maharani Jind Kaur, followed in 1860\. Sikh soldiers of the British Indian Army served across the empire, and small numbers of settlers followed. The great migration came after the Second World War, when Britain's first South Asian immigrants included Punjabi Sikhs from the Jullundur Doab, who settled in Midland towns such as Birmingham and Leeds and in the London borough of Southall, taking work in factories and foundries and building the communities their gurdwaras still serve.

## The first gurdwaras: the Khalsa Jatha and the pioneer temples

The Khalsa Jatha British Isles was founded in 1908 and was the first gurdwara to be established in Europe. From 1913 to 1969 its congregation met at Sinclair Road in West Kensington, and since 1969 it has stood on Queensdale Road in Shepherd's Bush, where it remains the oldest Sikh institution in the country. A gurdwara also opened in London in 1911, partly funded by the Maharaja of Patiala. For decades these London temples served a small community; only after the post war migration did gurdwaras multiply, first in converted houses, halls and churches, and later in the great purpose built temples of Southall, Gravesend, Birmingham and Glasgow.

## Where do Britain's Sikhs live today?

The 2021 census counted 520,092 Sikhs in England, 10,988 in Scotland (2022), 4,048 in Wales and 389 in Northern Ireland. The largest communities are in the West Midlands, with 172,398 Sikhs, and Greater London, with 144,543\. Sandwell has the largest Sikh population of any English local authority at 39,252, followed by Birmingham at 33,126 and Wolverhampton at 31,769, while Ealing, home to Southall, counts 28,491\. Wolverhampton has the highest Sikh share of any local authority at 12.0 percent. In 2006 there were already 352 gurdwaras in England alone, and the number has grown since.

## Nagar kirtans, langar and community life

Every spring, Britain's gurdwaras take to the streets for Vaisakhi, the festival that marks the founding of the Khalsa in 1699, with nagar kirtan processions led by the Panj Pyare and the Guru Granth Sahib carried in honour. Southall's procession is among the largest Sikh gatherings in the country. Between festivals, the gurdwaras run on seva: surveys by the British Sikh Report have recorded that most British Sikhs volunteer in some form, much of it through their gurdwara, and langar kitchens across the country feed anyone who comes, Sikh or not, every day of the year.

## Visiting a gurdwara in the UK

You do not need to be Sikh, to book, or to pay. Cover your head, remove your shoes, and sit on the floor of the prayer hall for as long as you wish; when the service ends, stay for langar, the free vegetarian meal served to all. Weekends and festival days are the busiest and the most welcoming times for a first visit, and the largest temples, such as Southall and Gravesend, receive visitors from across Britain and abroad.

## What was the first gurdwara in the UK?
