Guru Nanak Dwara is a Sikh gurdwara at 2302 North 9th Street in Phoenix, Arizona, established in 1970 and described by the city's own visitor guide as the longest continuously operating gurdwara community in Arizona. It began as one of the first ashrams of the 3HO movement founded by Yogi Bhajan, grew into a spiritual village in the heart of Phoenix, and opened a large new gurdwara building in 2016 after a building journey of more than twenty years. It is one of the entries in our guide to Gurdwaras in the USA.

## What is Guru Nanak Dwara, Phoenix?

Its name means the doorway, or gate, to Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Guru Nanak Dwara is the home of Sikh Dharma of Phoenix and of a congregation with two roots that meet in one darbar: the American students who came to Sikh practice through Yogi Bhajan's Kundalini Yoga teaching from 1969 onward, and the Punjabi families who settled across the Phoenix valley, the Valley of the Sun, from the 1980s and 1990s onward for work in its technology industries. The gurdwara serves both, and visitors are welcomed as a place to meditate or simply to learn about another culture.

## History: an ashram is born in 1970

Yogi Bhajan, a devout Sikh and Kundalini Yoga teacher from India, began teaching in Los Angeles in late 1969, telling the stories of the Sikh Gurus alongside yoga practice. In 1970 he founded the 3HO Foundation and began sending teachers out to start ashrams, centres of spiritual learning and disciplined community living. One of the very first teachers sent out, Don Conreaux, known as Babadon, established the Phoenix ashram, and Guru Nanak Dwara was born. The Sikh Dharma community of Phoenix dates its own beginning to 1971.

The early ashram drew many young Americans of the era who were looking for a drug free and alcohol free life built on daily spiritual discipline, meditation, singing, and cooking and eating together. In time the community settled into a large building on McDowell Road decorated with two storey high paintings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Guru Ram Das Ji, and at its peak the McDowell ashram housed more than a hundred people. The congregation later centred on its 9th Street site, where the ashram address of 2302 North 9th Street remains the gurdwara's home.

## The new gurdwara: a twenty year journey to 2016

By the early 1990s the growing sangat had outgrown its gurdwara, and in mid 1994 the community began planning a new one. What followed, as minister Meher Kaur Khalsa wrote for the Sikh Dharma Ministry, was a long saga of surveys, community meetings, financial challenges, disagreements and building and parking rules, with the fenced site lying dormant for years. A new Sikh Dharma of Phoenix board appointed in 2009 restarted the work, a Siri Singh Sahib Corporation sub committee added help in 2012, and a new architectural firm experienced with non profit organisations was hired. With fresh financing and sangat fundraising, construction moved ahead, and the community planned to open the new gurdwara by Guru Nanak Dev Ji's birthday in November 2016.

## Architecture: colour, light and the Guru's court

The new building was designed as an act of devotion in itself. Writing in Sikh Dharma International's newsletter, Gurukirn Kaur Khalsa, a watercolour painter on the design team, describes a colour scheme of golden brown, cream, gold and blue with cherry woodwork, recalling earth, water, woods and sky. Six large ceiling panels in the main sanctuary were painted in six shades of blue and compared at different times of day before the right one, conveying the expansiveness of the sky, was chosen, and the sanctuary carpet was designed in a geometric pattern that guides worshippers toward the Guru and then around to sit. A mezzanine railing in wood and metal, designed by a Yale University professor, carries a lotus motif, the flower that rises from the mud as a metaphor for the soul.

## Festivals and significance

Guru Nanak Dwara's significance is its place in the story of Sikhism in the American West: a community founded in 1970 through yoga students that became, and remains, Arizona's longest continuously operating gurdwara, now serving a valley that the Harvard Pluralism Project, reporting in 2003, already counted at more than a thousand Sikh families from Glendale to north Scottsdale to Mesa. The calendar follows the gurpurabs and Vaisakhi, and the community is active in Arizona interfaith work; its members serve on the board of the Arizona Interfaith Movement. The village idea, life centred on the gurdwara, has been its model from the ashram days onward.

## How do you reach Guru Nanak Dwara, Phoenix?

The gurdwara stands at 2302 North 9th Street, Phoenix, Arizona 85006, in the central city, a short drive from downtown Phoenix; most visitors come by car and park on site. It keeps daily hours for visitors. As at any gurdwara, cover your head, remove your shoes and wash your hands before entering, and you are welcome to sit in the darbar for kirtan and to join the langar, the free vegetarian meal served to all.
