Nanaksar Gurdwara Gursikh Temple is the Sikh temple at 1410 Horsehills Road NW in northeast Edmonton, Alberta, the largest gurdwara in Alberta at 30,000 square feet on a 90 acre site. Opened in April 1976 at 4603 118 Avenue, it moved to its present prairie site in 1996, where volunteers have built its great domed temple by hand for decades. It is one of the entries in our guide to [Gurdwaras in Canada](https://jugti.com/kosh/religion/gurdwaras/gurdwaras-in-canada/).

## What is Nanaksar Gurdwara, Edmonton?

Nanaksar Gurdwara Gursikh Temple is a gurdwara, a Sikh place of worship: the word means the doorway to the Guru, and its prayer hall centres on the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh scripture honoured as the eternal Guru. It belongs to the Nanaksar tradition, a devotional movement rooted in the teaching of Baba Nand Singh Ji and Baba Isher Singh Ji of Nanaksar Kaleran in Punjab, known for all night kirtan, full moon gatherings and strict, loving discipline around the scripture. The temple's own site says it was established by Baba Mihan Singh Ji to spread meditation, truthful living and service to humanity.

## History: opened in April 1976, one of Alberta's first two gurdwaras

Alberta's first two gurdwaras opened almost together in the spring of 1976: Calgary's with a groundbreaking ceremony in April, and Edmonton's Nanaksar with an opening ceremony the same month. For its first twenty years the Edmonton temple stood at 4603 118 Avenue, serving the small but growing Sikh community of a prairie capital whose Punjabi families were then concentrated in the city's northeast. In 1996 it moved to the present Horsehills Road site, off Manning Drive at the city's edge, where open fields gave the congregation room to build something far larger.

## Built by volunteers: the little gurdwara on the prairie that kept growing

The Horsehills temple is famous in Edmonton for how it was built: by the sangat itself. Reporting in 2011, the Edmonton Journal described construction still carrying on 22 years after it started, funded by the coins and small bills dropped in the prayer room collection box and raised by volunteer labour from as far away as England and India, with university students spending summers laying tile and no contractors hired. The dome by then towered ten storeys above the surrounding fields. The Sikh Heritage Museum of Canada calls the result, at 30,000 square feet on a 90 acre site with 20 acres set aside for the complex, the largest gurdwara in Alberta, and still growing.

## Daily life: a temple that opens at 3 a.m.

The same Journal account gives the temple's rhythm. The doors open at 3 a.m., when the first priest begins reading the scripture in the upstairs prayer room; kitchen volunteers arrive at 5:30 a.m. to start breakfast, and food stays available through the day. In 2011 Nanaksar was the largest of four temples serving about 12,000 Edmonton Sikhs, and the only one serving langar, the free vegetarian meal open to all, seven days a week. Its 10,000 square foot dining hall has a floor of marble and granite salvaged from demolished Edmonton buildings, and school groups are among the visitors who come to learn about the Sikh faith.

## Full moon nights and festivals

Nanaksar devotion turns on the full moon: the tradition holds that Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born on a full moon night, so every full moon is marked here, and more than 1,000 people were expected to drive out for a full moon celebration in the Journal's 2011 report, with more than 2,000 for the Diwali fireworks. On a full moon day the prayer room and dining hall fill in turns, as worshippers pray, come downstairs to eat, talk and work, and return upstairs to pray again. The temple's own visiting guide welcomes everyone, asking guests to dress modestly, cover the head, remove shoes and wash hands before going up to the darbar hall.

## Why does Nanaksar Gurdwara matter to Edmonton?

It matters because it is Alberta's largest gurdwara and one of its first, raised not by a developer but by decades of volunteer hands on an open prairie site. Edmonton's Sikh community has grown far beyond the roughly 12,000 people counted in the 2011 report, and the Horsehills temple remains the community's devotional heart in the northeast: a place built slowly, coin by coin and tile by tile, that its builders simply describe as a labour of love.

## How do you visit Nanaksar Gurdwara?

You visit at 1410 Horsehills Road NW, Edmonton, AB, in the city's northeast off Manning Drive (Highway 15); current listings give daily hours of 4 a.m. to 9 p.m. and the phone number 780 472 6335, and the temple's site is nanaksargurdwara.ca. Everyone is welcome, whatever their religion or background, and no booking or payment is needed. Cover your head, remove your shoes, wash your hands, sit in the upstairs darbar hall for as long as you wish, and stay for langar. A full moon evening is the most atmospheric time to come.
