The Pape Gurdwara is a gurdwara, a Sikh place of worship: the word means the doorway to the Guru, and the prayer hall centres on the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh scripture honoured as the eternal Guru, while the langar kitchen serves a free vegetarian meal to everyone who comes. It stands at 269 Pape Avenue, south of Gerrard Street East in Toronto's east end, a short walk from the Gerrard India Bazaar, the South Asian shopping strip often called Little India. Small beside the suburban mega gurdwaras that came later, it carries a weight none of them can claim: it was first. ## History: Ontario's first gurdwara Sikh life in Canada began on the west coast, where pioneers reached British Columbia in the early 1900s and opened the country's first gurdwara in Vancouver in 1908\. Ontario's community stayed tiny for decades, because Canadian immigration rules kept families from India out. The turning point came in the 1960s: the quota system was dropped completely in 1962, new immigration regulations followed in 1967, and between 1964 and 1970 more Sikhs arrived in Canada than in the previous eighty years combined. Toronto suddenly needed a gurdwara of its own. The Shromani Sikh Society answered that need at 269 Pape Avenue. The Sikh Heritage Museum of Canada's timeline records the opening under 1968, while Heritage Toronto dates the temple's establishment to April 1969, a date that coincided with the 500th anniversary of the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of the Sikh faith. From those rooms, Ontario Sikh life began. ## A first home for new arrivals Like many first gurdwaras, Pape was far more than a prayer hall. The Sikh Heritage Museum of Canada describes it as a first place of contact for any new Sikh arrival in Toronto: a newcomer could find the language, the food, the news from Punjab and the connections that make a strange city liveable. Heritage Toronto adds that students and families made weekend trips from Kitchener, Waterloo and even Kingston, because for years this one small temple served a whole province's worth of Sikhs who had nowhere else to gather. ## The neighbourhood it seeded: Gerrard Street and Little India A large Sikh community settled in the streets around the gurdwara, and the surrounding area changed with it. The Heritage Museum notes that the storefronts on nearby Gerrard Street followed the community, and local cinemas began screening Bollywood films, the beginnings of the Gerrard India Bazaar that still anchors South Asian life in Toronto's east end. The gurdwara came first; the neighbourhood grew around it. That is the pattern of Sikh settlement across Canada, and Pape Avenue is where it happened first in Ontario. ## Why does the Pape Gurdwara still matter? It matters because almost everything Sikh in Ontario traces back to it. A decade after Pape opened, the community it served was large enough to start Ontario Khalsa Darbar in Mississauga in 1978, today the largest and busiest gurdwara in Canada. The line from a converted horse stable on Pape Avenue to the great suburban temples of the Greater Toronto Area runs straight through this small building, which still serves its east Toronto sangat more than fifty years on. ## How do you visit the Pape Gurdwara?
