The Sikh Society of Calgary is a gurdwara, a Sikh place of worship: the word means the doorway to the Guru, and the prayer hall centres on the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh scripture honoured as the eternal Guru, while the langar kitchen serves a free vegetarian meal to everyone who comes. Its present building is a handsome red brick temple with a great white Khanda symbol on its glass entrance, set back above a long flight of stairs in Calgary's southwest. For more than forty years the Government of Canada has called it a pillar of Sikhism in the local community, and it still hosts the daily worship and festivals around which Calgary's Sikh life turns. ## Before the gurdwara: Calgary's pioneer Sikh families Sikhs have called the Calgary area home since the early 1900s. The society's own history names Sardar Harnam Singh Hari, who made Alberta his family home in 1910, as the first Sikh family in the Calgary area, followed in the early 1930s by Sardar Berama Singh and Sardarni Dhun Kaur, who moved from Pincher Creek to Calgary. Through the 1950s and 1960s, as more families migrated in, the community held religious gatherings in private residences. The first public Diwan came in 1967, at the Jubilee Auditorium, to commemorate Guru Nanak Dev Ji's Gurpurab; after that the Diwans became regular events in rented halls, and the Albert Park Community Centre in the city's southeast became a regular place for weddings. ## How did Calgary get its first gurdwara? Once the society was formed, building a gurdwara became its primary objective. It registered officially as the Singh Society on 18 March 1968, with a founding executive led by president Dr Gurcharanjit Singh Attariwala, whom the 2024 South Asian Inspirational Awards described as instrumental in establishing the city's first gurdwara. In 1972 the community bought five acres at the present site in the southwest. A sod turning ceremony was held on 13 April 1976, the ardas performed by Sardar Nasib S. Lail, and construction began that August. The society held its first Akhand Path, the uninterrupted reading of the scripture, in 1977; the building was completed in late 1978, and the official opening ceremony was held on 13 April 1979, the day of Vaisakhi. That October the society's name changed from Singh Society to Sikh Society. Its first Chanani, Rumalas, Chaur Sahib and kitchen utensils arrived as a gift from the Gurdwara Singh Sabha and the Khalsa Boys and Girls School of Nairobi, Kenya. The Sikh Heritage Museum of Canada notes that Alberta's first two gurdwaras opened almost together in the spring of 1976: Calgary's with the groundbreaking ceremony in April, and Edmonton's Nanaksar gurdwara with its opening ceremony in the same month. Calgary's waited three more years to open its doors, completed in 1978 and opened in 1979, and it has served the city ever since. ## The first priest and a Canadian academic first The society's first full time priest was Bhai Pashaura Singh, who came to Canada at thirty with a gold medal master's degree in Sikh Divinity from the Gurmat College of Punjabi University, Patiala. The society records that he went on to complete a master's in comparative religious studies at the University of Calgary in 1988 and a PhD in Sikh Studies at the University of Toronto in 1991, which the society describes as the first such doctorate in Canada. Bhai Harkirat Singh became the second full time priest in 1989, bringing another gold medal in Sikh Divinity, and Bhai Joginder Singh has served the sangat since 2007. ## The Guru Nanak Panjabi School and daily life The Guru Nanak Panjabi School lives at the southwest gurdwara, and its roots run deep: the school's own page says classes for young people began as early as 1969, and the school itself was formed in 1979 with Sardar Sulakhan Singh Chopra as principal. Volunteer run to this day, it offers drop in Sunday classes and registered Friday evening classes for children, Sikh summer camps, and an adult Santhia class in reading and understanding Gurbani. The temple's daily program begins at 5 a.m. with Prakash and Nitnem, continues through evening Rehras Sahib and ends with Sukh Asan at 7 p.m., with Asa Ki Vaar, katha and kirtan filling Sunday mornings. ## How do you visit the Sikh Society of Calgary?
